Rawal’s controversial exit
The actor had withdrawn from the project in May after onboarding the project and filming had begun. He had dismissed rumours that his decision was prompted by creative differences with the director.
Through a post on his official X account, Rawal had reiterated his love, respect, and faith in Priyadarshan. According to media reports, his departure was not related to monetary dissatisfaction. Initially offering only vague explanations, citing lack of interest to continue working on the film, the actor later released a statement through his lawyer.
Akshay Kumar, who is producing the film, had initiated a legal dispute by suing Rawal for Rs 25 crore, citing breach of contract and unprofessional conduct. He had reportedly incurred huge losses since Rawal had already signed an agreement and shot for the teaser promo.
Known for abruptly exiting projects
Kumar’s production company, Cape of Good Films, had acquired the rights of the film from Firoz Nadiadwala. Principal photography and shooting for promotions had already begun when Rawal confirmed his exit via social media on May 18. Reports suggest that while this is the first time Kumar is suing a co-actor in his career spanning three decades, Rawal has previously left Priyadarshan’s ‘Billu Barber’, produced by Shah Rukh Khan, in 2009, and Amit Rai’s ‘Oh My God 2’, in 2023.
The franchise remains an audience favourite
Hera Pheri is a remake of the classic Malayalam comedy film, Ramji Rao Speaking. Apart from the much-loved Hera Pheri franchise, the actor-director duo have also collaborated on other successful comedies like Bhool Bhilaiyaa, Hungama, and De Dana Dan.
The original Hera Pheri released in 2000, followed by Hera Pheri 2 in 2006. Fans now eagerly await the third installment, which will resume shooting soon.
