OTT releases this week: Alpha, Unmadham, Michael and more

The final week of August brings a packed line-up of films, series and documentaries across streaming platforms. From biographical dramas and action thrillers to Korean mysteries, Malayalam cinema and returning sitcoms, viewers have several new titles to choose from. Here are the major OTT releases arriving this week and in the first week of September.

Michael

Starring Jaafar Jackson, Colman Domingo and Nia Long, ‘Michael’ chronicles the life and career of music icon Michael Jackson, tracing his journey from his early years with The Jackson 5 to his emergence as the King of Pop. The biographical drama will premiere on Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar on August 29.

Mousetrap

Ryu Jun-yeol, Sol Kyung-gu and Kim Sung-oh headline ‘Mousetrap’, a Korean mystery thriller about a novelist whose identity, wealth and reputation are taken over by an enigmatic figure called The Rat. The writer joins forces with a loan shark as he attempts to uncover what happened to him. ‘Mousetrap’ will be available on Netflix from August 28.

Alpha

Alia Bhatt and Sharvari Wagh lead ‘Alpha’, an action thriller centred on two female RAW agents who find themselves caught up in dangerous missions and an unpredictable world of espionage. Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor also feature in the film. ‘Alpha’ will begin streaming on Netflix on August 28.

Dark Matter (Season 2)

Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly and Alice Braga return for the second season of the sci-fi series ‘Dark Matter’. The story follows Jason Dessen as he continues to deal with alternate realities and the consequences of the choices that have transformed his life, while trying to protect his family from new threats. Based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 novel, Season 2 will stream on Apple TV+ from August 28.

The Whisper Man

Adam Scott, Robert De Niro and Michelle Monaghan star in ‘The Whisper Man’, a crime thriller about a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old son is kidnapped. Desperate to find him, the father seeks help from his retired detective father, eventually discovering links between the abduction and an old serial-killer investigation. ‘The Whisper Man’ will premiere on Netflix on August 28.

Babita Singh Reporting

Nimisha Sajayan, Anshumaan Pushkar, Barun Sobti and Rajesh Kumar feature in ‘Babita Singh Reporting’, an investigative thriller following a suspended police officer who begins looking into the murder of a childhood friend. As the investigation progresses, Babita is forced to confront unresolved aspects of her own past. The series will stream on Amazon Prime Video from August 28.

The Secret Woman

‘The Secret Woman’ is a Danish mystery thriller starring Natalie Madueño and Claes Bang. The story centres on Louise, who has built a quiet life in Norway until a stranger arrives with a startling claim that she is actually Helene Söderberg, a Danish woman who disappeared years ago. The film will be available on Netflix from August 28.

Four Hands, Two Sonatas

Song Kang, Lee Jun-young and Jang Gyu-ri star in the Korean musical romance ‘Four Hands, Two Sonatas’, set against the competitive environment of an elite arts school. The story follows three young musicians whose lives become intertwined through friendship, rivalry, romance and their ambitions. ‘Four Hands, Two Sonatas’ will stream on Netflix from August 29.

Part-Timers

The Telugu slice-of-life series ‘Part-Timers’ follows roommates Sindhu and Teju, played by Thanuja Puttaswamy and Gnaneswari Kandregula, whose very different personalities lead to an unexpected friendship. While navigating everyday problems, the two women share a common dream of starting their own business. ‘Part-Timers’ will premiere on JioHotstar on August 28.

All the Truth in My Lies

Based on Elísabet Benavent’s bestselling novel, ‘All the Truth in My Lies’ follows six friends who head out for a seemingly carefree bachelorette trip. Their celebration takes an unsettling turn as long-hidden secrets, complicated relationships and unresolved conflicts begin to surface. The film will stream on Netflix from August 28.

Adults (Season 2)

The second season of ‘Adults’ brings back Samir, Billie, Paul, Issa and Anton as they continue navigating the chaotic realities of early adulthood. The new episodes explore everything from uncomfortable situations and difficult conversations to toxic workplaces, with the group relying on one another to find unconventional ways out of their problems. ‘Adults Season 2’ will be available on JioHotstar from August 28.

Crime Patrol

Ajay Devgn takes over as the host of the new season of ‘Crime Patrol’, which will feature stories inspired by real criminal cases. Alongside presenting the investigations, Devgn will discuss how changing social behaviour and pressures in modern life can influence people and their decisions, while encouraging viewers to remain cautious and alert. ‘Crime Patrol – Crime Ka Current Season’ will premiere on SonyLIV on August 31.

Turning Point: Generation 9/11

Marking 25 years since the September 11 attacks, ‘Turning Point: Generation 9/11’ examines the long-term impact of the tragedy on a generation that grew up in its aftermath. The documentary features accounts from people whose lives were directly altered by the attacks, including children who lost their families and young Afghans affected by the subsequent developments. It will stream on Netflix from September 2.

The Runner

Gal Gadot stars as Maia Marten, a London lawyer whose routine morning run turns into a desperate race against time when her son is kidnapped. An anonymous caller gives her a series of instructions, forcing Maia to continue running while completing dangerous tasks in an attempt to save her child. ‘The Runner’ will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 2.

Gandhari

Taapsee Pannu takes on a physically demanding action role in ‘Gandhari’, a revenge drama centred on a mother driven by an intense desire to protect her child. Directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, the film also stars Ishwak Singh, Swastika Mukherjee, Chhaya Kadam, Mita Vashisht and Jatin Sarna. ‘Gandhari’ will stream on Netflix from September 3.

Unmadham

Kunchacko Boban stars in ‘Unmadham’ as Shelly, a police officer who dreams of making it as a screenwriter but finds his professional disappointments affecting his marriage and personal life. After returning to police duty and being transferred following a difficult assignment, Shelly encounters an old case involving the alleged suicide of a young woman. What begins as potential material for his screenplay gradually turns into a serious investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Directed by Kiran Das in his feature debut, ‘Unmadham’ also stars Lijomol Jose and Sudheesh and will stream on SonyLIV from September 4.
