OTT releases this week: Vishwanath & Sons, Thudakkam, Lust Stories 3 and more

OTT platforms are set for a packed week of new releases, with films and series spanning romance, crime, horror, historical drama and supernatural thrillers. From Netflix’s latest anthology instalment ‘Lust Stories 3’ to the Korean period drama ‘The Scandal’ and Malayalam films making their digital premieres, there is a wide mix of titles arriving between September 11 and September 18.

Here is a look at the films and series arriving on streaming platforms this week.

Stolen Heartbeats

The Spanish revenge thriller ‘Stolen Heartbeats’, originally titled ‘En coma’, centres on Anabel, who is left in a coma following a violent attack. Her life becomes mysteriously linked to Rafael, a nurse with the ability to hear the dead, as they become caught up in a dangerous plot involving an illegal heart transplant. The film begins streaming on Netflix on September 11.

Ghamasaan

Set in the rugged ravines of Bundelkhand, ‘Ghamasaan’ follows the escalating confrontation between a determined police officer and Maharaj, a feared dacoit leader played by Arshad Warsi. Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, the crime drama revolves around their deadly cat-and-mouse pursuit and arrives on ZEE5 on September 11.

Vishwanath & Sons

Suriya and Mamitha Baiju-led ‘Vishwanath & Sons’ follows Sanjay Vishwanath, a wealthy man in his 40s who has deliberately kept marriage and major changes out of his carefully organised life. His routine is disrupted when a baby enters his world, while Mamitha Baiju’s Maddy Jay further alters the course of his life. ‘Vishwanath & Sons’ begins streaming on Netflix on September 11.

Varavu

Joju George plays Paulson, known as Polachan, in Shaji Kailas’ family drama ‘Varavu’. The story follows Polachan as he returns to his hometown years after leaving it, when his family begins searching for Willi, the youngest member who disappeared four years earlier. With his sister Daisy preparing to move to Italy, the search forces Polachan to revisit people and unresolved memories from his past. ‘Varavu’ premieres on ZEE5 on September 11.

Ali Baba Aur 40 Bhoot

Asha Negi stars as neuropsychologist Alisha ‘Ali’ Nigam in the supernatural thriller ‘Ali Baba Aur 40 Bhoot’. A sceptic who relies on science, Ali sets out to find her missing father and is drawn into unexplained events involving 40 spirits. She joins forces with Baba, a police officer played by Vishal Vashishtha, as their investigation uncovers a connection between the disappearance and the restless spirits. The series streams on JioHotstar from September 11.

Prince of Mollywood

‘Prince of Mollywood’ follows Firoz, played by Dain Davis, a young man determined to become an actor despite his wealthy father’s refusal to support his ambitions. Convinced that he is destined for stardom, Firoz finds himself caught between his dreams and his family’s expectations. Nirmal Palazhi, Harishma, Vidya Vijaykumar, Fukru and Aswin Vijayan also feature in the film, which arrives on JioHotstar on September 11.

The Revolutionaries

Nikkhil Advani’s historical series ‘The Revolutionaries’ turns to a lesser-known chapter of India’s independence movement, drawing inspiration from Sanjeev Sanyal’s book ‘Revolutionaries: The Other Story of How India Won Its Freedom’. The story follows four young men who choose armed resistance against British rule in the aftermath of the 1857 uprising. ‘The Revolutionaries’ premieres on Amazon Prime Video on September 11.

A Love Other Than Yours

The Korean romantic drama ‘A Love Other Than Yours’ explores what happens when a decade-long relationship begins to lose its emotional spark. Namgung Ho and Lee Mi-do play a couple who have been together for 10 years, only to find themselves reconsidering their relationship after new romantic possibilities enter their lives. Directed by Hwang Seung-ki, the film begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video on September 12.

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story

The fourth instalment in Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster’ anthology turns to the notorious Lizzie Borden case of 1892. Ella Beatty plays Lizzie, whose parents, Andrew Borden, played by Charlie Hunnam, and Abby Borden, played by Rebecca Hall, are brutally murdered, leaving their daughter under suspicion. The series also examines the social pressures, misogyny and family tensions surrounding the case and arrives on Netflix on September 17.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy

‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ follows television news correspondent Charlie Cannon, played by Jack Reynor, and his wife Larissa, played by Laia Costa, as they struggle to cope with the loss of their daughter, Katie. Their grief takes an unsettling turn when they receive an impossible call from Cairo, leading to their daughter’s return after years inside a sarcophagus. Her disturbing behaviour soon reveals the presence of a malevolent force. The horror film premieres on JioHotstar on September 17.

Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 (Season 2)

The second season of ‘Stranger Things: Tales From ’85’ returns to Hawkins between the events of Seasons 2 and 3 of the original live-action series. Dustin, Eleven, Mike, Will, Lucas and Max team up with newcomer Nikki as the Hawkins Investigators Club looks into abandoned mines and a new supernatural threat capable of opening another gateway to the Upside Down. Season 2 begins streaming on Netflix on September 17.

The Scandal

Set during Korea’s Joseon era, ‘The Scandal’ follows Lady Cho, played by Son Ye-jin, as she turns seduction into a calculated game. She challenges the notorious womaniser Cho Won to pursue Hui Yeon, a young widow, but the wager soon develops into a dangerous tangle of desire, deception and betrayal. Directed by Jung Ji-woo, the film adapts the story of the 2003 Korean movie ‘Untold Scandal’, itself inspired by the French classic ‘Dangerous Liaisons’. ‘The Scandal’ releases on Netflix on September 18.

Lust Stories 3

Netflix’s anthology franchise ‘Lust Stories’ returns with its third instalment, bringing together four new directors for stories centred on desire, intimacy and the complexities of contemporary relationships. The anthology marks the first time the franchise has reached a third instalment, with all four segments set to debut together rather than being released separately. ‘Lust Stories 3’ premieres globally on Netflix on September 18.

Best of the Best

‘Best of the Best’ follows childhood friends Maya, played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Anjali, played by Priyanka Kedia, as they join their university’s competitive Bollywood-fusion dance troupe. Their attempt to compete for the US Championship quickly proves more demanding and cut-throat than expected, testing both their friendship and their ambitions. ‘Best of the Best’ premieres on Netflix on September 18.

Thudakkam

Jude Anthany Joseph’s Malayalam film ‘Thudakkam’ marks the acting debut of Vismaya Mohanlal and Aashish Joe Antony, with Sai Kumar and Manoj K. Jayan also appearing in the cast and Mohanlal making a special cameo. The story follows Meenu, a martial arts practitioner whose life is thrown into danger when she becomes the target of a persistent stalker. After its theatrical run and positive audience response, ‘Thudakkam’ arrives on JioHotstar on September 18.
