Year Ender 2025: Top-grossing Indian films that dominated headlines and revenue
India’s film business has been running at full tilt in 2025, with well over 1,500 titles reaching cinemas across multiple languages. Final annual data will be confirmed only later in December, but figures compiled so far show an extraordinary volume of releases and a sharp concentration of revenue at the top.
Data from Sacnilk indicate that 1,519 films released this year have generated a combined gross of ₹12,291.27 crore. Strikingly, the ten biggest earners alone account for ₹4,443.42 crore – more than one-third of overall box-office revenue. The standout performer currently remains ‘Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1’, though December release ‘Dhurandhar’ is still expanding at an aggressive pace.

Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1
The Kannada industry registered a milestone when Rishab Shetty returned with ‘Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1’, a prelude to the 2022 hit. Out on 2 October, the film amassed ₹852.26 crore worldwide, despite a mixed critical response. Produced by Hombale Films and reportedly mounted for about ₹125 crore, the prequel dominated the Dasara season and continues streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Whether it stays atop the leaderboard depends largely on the late-year surge of ‘Dhurandhar’.
Chhaava
Vicky Kaushal’s historical action-drama ‘Chhaava’ was one of Bollywood’s most heavily discussed titles. Released on 14 February, the film took in ₹807.91 crore worldwide. Reviews were divided, though Akshaye Khanna drew widespread acclaim for his turn as Aurangzeb. The production cost is estimated between ₹90 crore and ₹130 crore. ‘Chhaava’ is now streaming on Netflix.
Dhurandhar
Aditya Dhar’s ensemble action thriller, released on 5 December, has turned into a runaway success. After a ₹28-crore opening, the film accelerated sharply in week two, pushing its 12-day global total to ₹634 crore. Backed by an estimated ₹225–₹250 crore budget and led by Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan and Sanjay Dutt, ‘Dhurandhar’ is widely expected to overtake both ‘Chhaava’ and ‘Kantara’ if momentum holds.
Saiyaara
Mohit Suri’s ‘Saiyaara’ became 2025’s unlikely sensation. The romantic drama opened on 18 July with minimal publicity and almost no media fanfare but finished as the highest-grossing Indian romance ever with ₹570.33 crore in global receipts. Debut actors Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda earned strong notices, and the soundtrack spread rapidly across social platforms. The film was produced for about ₹45–₹60 crore and is currently streaming on Netflix.
Coolie
Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ entered theatres on 14 August amid considerable expectation and a gigantic reported budget of ₹400 crore. Featuring Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna and Soubin Shahir, the film landed alongside War 2 and finished with a respectable ₹518 crore worldwide – short of the pre-release hype but still among the year’s biggest earners. ‘Coolie’ is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
War 2
‘War 2’, which paired Hrithik Roshan with Jr NTR, was expected to mirror or surpass the success of the 2019 original. Instead, critics rebuked its screenplay and execution. Released on 14 August, the film grossed ₹364.35 crore worldwide against a hefty estimated budget of ₹400 crore. The film is streaming on Netflix.
Mahavatar Narsimha
Animation rarely delivers blockbuster-scale business in India, but ‘Mahavatar Narsimha’ proved a notable exception. Directed by Ashwin Kumar and presented by Hombale Films, the production was reportedly completed for about ₹40 crore and returned ₹326.82 crore globally. Viewers praised the animation detail and visual scale. The film is available on Netflix.
Lokah Chapter One: Chandra
Regional cinema produced another standout with the Malayalam film ‘Lokah Chapter One: Chandra’. Backed by producer Dulquer Salmaan and starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, the picture arrived on 28 August and became a runaway winner – earning ₹303.86 crore on a modest ₹30-crore budget. The title is streaming on JioHotstar.
They Call Him OG
Pawan Kalyan’s ‘They Call Him OG’ opened with enormous curiosity and posted the biggest first-day collection of the year – ₹155 crore worldwide. Revenue plunged in subsequent weeks, however, and the film concluded with a global gross of ₹295.22 crore. Estimated spending ranged from ₹200 crore to ₹250 crore. The film is streaming on Netflix.
Housefull 5
The fifth instalment of the broad comedy franchise closed the top bracket. ‘Housefull 5’, starring Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jackie Shroff and Johnny Lever, was criticised for crude humour but still collected ₹288.67 crore worldwide. Production costs were estimated between ₹225 crore and ₹240 crore. The film can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
With two weeks of 2025 still to run and a December juggernaut challenging the order, India’s box-office table may yet see a reshuffle. For now, the year has already delivered volume, volatility and a fierce battle for the top slot.
