Kochi: The upcoming elections of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) are shaping up to be among the most competitive in recent times, with strong indications of a multi-cornered contest for key leadership roles, including the coveted post of president.

With elections scheduled for 15 August, the nomination process began on 17 July and saw an enthusiastic response on day one itself, with at least five candidates collecting nomination papers. More than 30 members are expected to contest the 17 available positions, which include six key office-bearers and an 11-member executive committee.

The spotlight is particularly on the president’s post, following the decision of superstar Mohanlal, who led the previous committee, not to seek re-election. His exit has opened the door for a new wave of leadership. According to sources, there is a push to bring in a younger face, with actor Kunchacko Boban being considered a strong contender.

At the same time, a faction within the organisation is working to convince veteran actor Vijayaraghavan to take up the mantle. If he agrees, insiders suggest that he may secure the presidency unopposed.

Meanwhile, the race for the general secretary’s post is also heating up. Actor Baburaj is said to be eyeing the position, although this equation may shift if efforts to bring in a woman candidate to the role succeed. Shwetha Menon, a former office-bearer, is being actively considered, although her close associates state that no final decision has been made.

Several familiar names from previous executive committees are also expected to contest, including Tovino Thomas, Tini Tom, Vinu Mohan, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Jayan Cherthala, and Suresh Krishna.

Nominations for the AMMA elections will remain open until 24 July.
