Cynthia Erivo has been a familiar name in theatre and film circles for years, but in recent days she has also found surprising visibility in a different corner of the internet. Social media platforms have been flooded with humorous clips and images of the award-winning performer, turning her into an unlikely meme favourite during the global promotion of ‘Wicked: For Good.’

How the memes started

Erivo’s promotional tour for ‘Wicked: For Good’, which features Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum, has offered several moments that quickly became viral content. The film opened in cinemas on 21 November, but its publicity trail has taken on a life of its own thanks to clips of the actor that fans have enthusiastically shared and reshared.

One widely circulated meme began during an interaction with a fan in Paris. Erivo later explained the context on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, saying the fan had returned a hat Erivo believed she had lost a year earlier. Her instinctive reaction, which involved stepping back in surprise, became a popular social media gag.

Another viral moment took place at the premiere of ‘Wicked: For Good’, where Erivo appeared genuinely stunned by the volume of applause from the crowd. She looked straight at the camera while posing, creating a screenshot that immediately spread across social platforms.

Protecting Ariana Grande

Erivo also gained attention for her quick response during the Singapore premiere of ‘Wicked’. When an intruder breached the red carpet barricade in an attempt to approach Ariana Grande, Erivo instinctively reached out to shield her co-star. This protective gesture was applauded widely online, with fans praising her presence of mind.

Older moments resurface

Following the success of these new clips, online users revisited past red carpet appearances and found earlier expressions that fit perfectly into today’s meme culture.

One image shows Erivo with her fingers pressed to her temples, as though deep in concentration while deciding which films to recommend.

Another captures her offering an exaggerated polite smile at the SAG Awards, a moment fans have amusingly repurposed for a range of situations.

These resurfaced clips show that Erivo’s expressive nature has long been part of her public persona, even if it is only now being appreciated in meme form.
