Legendary actor Kamal Haasan, fondly known as Ulaganayakan (universal hero), turned 71 on November 7. Beginning his acting journey at the age of five with the classic film ‘Kalathur Kannamma’, Kamal has been unstoppable ever since. His debut performance even earned him the National Award for Best Child Actor. From Tamil and Malayalam to Kannada, Telugu, Bengali and Hindi cinema, his versatility has shaped one of Indian cinema’s most remarkable careers. Beyond acting, he has also excelled as a screenwriter, director and producer.

Even today, Kamal Haasan continues to perform with the same energy and passion that have defined his decades-long journey. So, what’s the secret behind his stamina at 71?

His mornings begin with an intense gym session, often lasting up to two hours. He focuses mainly on crunches and weight training, never missing a workout — even during shoots or travel.

Kamal also practices yoga for about half an hour daily to maintain balance, flexibility and overall well-being. He finds time for meditation as well, to care for his mental health. Walking has always been part of his fitness routine — he used to walk up to 14 kilometres a day before an injury forced him to slow down.

In his younger days, Kamal had a hearty appetite. During an interview with Vijay Sethupathi, he once admitted, “I used to eat a lot. My friends were always amazed by my appetite. Even Sivaji Ganesan was shocked to see how much I could eat!”

During the filming of ‘Aalavandhan’, Kamal followed a strict diet to prepare for his role — eating 32 egg whites every day, along with boiled chicken. After completing the film, he avoided eggs entirely for almost a year.

As he grew older, Kamal began to eat more consciously, choosing foods rich in protein and fibre. His breakfast typically includes toast, fresh fruits and eggs, while his lunch and dinner are kept light. He avoids processed foods and sweets, preferring a clean, balanced diet that complements his disciplined lifestyle.
