'This is exactly why period drama excite me..', Rashmika Mandanna talks about 'Chhaava'

Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna are all set to hit the big screen together for the first time in the much-anticipated period drama, ‘Chhaava’. The film, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is scheduled to release in theatres on 14th February.
Excited about her role in the film, Rashmika Mandanna shared her thoughts on bringing history to life through cinema.
“When we study history, we read about these heroes. And when we read about them, we don’t necessarily know the emotions behind it. But when you see them on screen, you can feel all the emotions,” she explained.
Talking about her excitement for period dramas, she added, “So I feel like this is exactly why period dramas excite me. When you have stories like these and portray real historical characters, it’s truly amazing—almost magical. Today, I’m really proud to have played a character like Maharani because I never imagined I would get the opportunity to portray a Maharani or be part of a period film myself. But now that I am, I’m very happy.”
Vicky Kaushal calls Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj an ‘unsung hero’
For Vicky Kaushal, taking on the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was both an honour and a challenge. When asked about building a character with limited historical records, he reflected on the importance of celebrating forgotten heroes.
“Firstly, it’s unfortunate that a great figure like Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj remains an unsung hero for us. It’s about time that we bring these unsung heroes into the spotlight and celebrate them. Especially now, with the power of the internet and our cinema going global, everything is in place for us to showcase our true heroes.”
He also acknowledged the immense effort required to make a period film authentic, saying, “Historical period dramas are always very challenging—not just for the actors, but also for the director, producer, and everyone involved in the making of the film—because maintaining authenticity is extremely important.”
