National Award-winning actor Vidya Balan is known for her bold views and strong perspective on life — and that’s no secret. The acclaimed actor, who made her Hindi film debut with Parineeta (also starring Saif Ali Khan), was declared Best Actress at the 59th National Film Awards in 2011 for her performance in The Dirty Picture, directed by Milan Luthria and inspired by the life of the late sensational actor Silk Smitha.

Within a short span of her career, Vidya rose to the pinnacle of fame with her powerful performances in several iconic films, including The Dirty Picture, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Kahaani, to name a few.

The versatile actor married renowned film producer Siddharth Roy Kapur in 2012. She continues to be active in the film industry, with notable roles in Tumhari Sulu and the recently released Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which starred Kartik Aaryan in the lead role.

Apart from acting, Vidya is an enigmatic presence on social media, often entertaining her fans with fun reels and candid interactions. A vocal personality, she frequently shares her thoughts on her journey as a female actor in a male-dominated industry, her broader views on life, and her advocacy for body positivity.

In a recent conversation with Filmfare, Vidya opened up about the feedback and unsolicited advice she received when signing on for Kismat Konnection — a romantic drama directed by Aziz Mirza and released in 2008, in which she was paired with Shahid Kapoor.

“When I signed up for Kismat Konnection, people reminded me to be a little careful — asking me to shed some weight — since my co-star Shahid was two years younger than me,” Vidya recalled.

Speaking further, she added, “Since 2019, almost every producer or director of the films I signed used to call me, asking me to lose weight. But I would tell them, ‘I’m not sitting on my haunches doing nothing.’ They were literally asking me to shed weight to play the most regular characters. But I stood my ground. Luckily, my career panned out in a way that proved I didn’t need to conform — and most importantly, I was never going to let that get in my way,” firmly stated the National Award-winning actor.

Vidya’s statements have reignited conversations around body positivity on the internet, with many siding with her.

Her revelations shed light on the enormous pressure that even the most talented and accomplished actors face in their careers — to conform to industry standards, keep up with unrealistic expectations, and satisfy stakeholder demands, often at the cost of individuality and authenticity.
