South Korean actor Jung Eun-woo, known for his roles in ‘Sharp’, ‘Bride of the Sun’ and ‘Welcome to Waikiki 2’, has died at the age of 39. His family confirmed his sudden passing, which has shocked fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry. Authorities have not released the cause of death.

The news has drawn renewed attention to the actor’s final social media post, shared just one day before he died, prompting widespread speculation and discussions online.

Final Instagram post raises questions

On the eve of his death, Jung uploaded a reflective Instagram post featuring images of late stars Leslie Cheung and Amy Winehouse alongside his own photograph. The caption read, “Missed, envied, regretted.. PIR.BG.”

Social-media users later noted that when “PIR.BG” is flipped upside down, it resembles “GB.RIP”, interpreted by some as “Goodbye. Rest In Peace.” The post has since gone viral, amassing tens of thousands of comments. One follower wrote: “It was a signal, but no one noticed.”

Earlier, Jung had also uploaded an image of a red moon with the caption: “Red moon. Whether hanging or hanging. It’s going to fall anyway.”

Death and funeral arrangements

Jung died on the morning of 11 February. His wake is being held in Special Room 2 of the New Koryo Hospital Funeral Hall in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province. His funeral is scheduled for 13 February at noon, after which cremation will take place at Byeokje Seunghwawon.

Officials have not indicated any suspicion of foul play, and the family has asked for privacy.

Early life and path to acting

Born Jung Dong-jin on 10 April 1986 in Incheon, Jung first pursued basketball at Songdo Middle and High Schools. An injury, coupled with concerns about his height for the sport, ended those ambitions.

He later shifted to acting, despite not undergoing formal academy training. Speaking about his unconventional start, he once said: “I didn’t learn acting by going to an academy. I learned it on set. My appearance made me look older, so I was cast in roles that were older than my actual age.”

Jung studied at Dongguk University’s Department of Theatre and Film and made his acting debut in 2006 through KBS2’s ‘Rounding Off Season 3’.

Two decades of work in television and film

Across nearly 20 years, Jung built a steady career in dramas and films. He gained early recognition through KBS’s youth drama ‘Sharp’ and later rose to prominence with SBS’s ‘Bride of the Sun’ in 2011.
