'I've seen women leave hotels after being exploited by...': Actress on Hema Committee Report

Following the release of the Hema Committee report on the Malayalam film industry, numerous actors have come forward to share their personal experiences of misconduct endured at the hands of their co-stars.

Bollywood actress Somy Ali has now come forward with an explosive declaration about the exploitation in the industry, claiming that she personally encountered #MeToo incidents where she was warned that visiting a certain man's suite was necessary if she wanted to advance in my career.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, the actress revealed, "I personally encountered #MeToo incidents where I was warned that visiting a certain man's suite was necessary if I wanted to advance in my career. I have also witnessed the heartbreaking 'walk of shame' — women, dishevelled and distressed, leaving hotel suites early in the morning after being exploited by some of the biggest actors in Bollywood, including individuals publicly seen as committed family men.”

She further emphasized, “My experience is just one of many, and the situation for women in the film industry — whether in Kerala or elsewhere — underscores the urgent need for systemic change. I sincerely hope the Hema Committee report serves as a wake-up call for the industry to protect and empower women and men, who are victimised so that they can work without fear of retribution.”

What is Hema Committee Report?

Last month, a redacted version of the Justice Hema Committee report on harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry was made public. It contains shocking accounts alleging harassment, exploitation, and ill-treatment of women professionals.

The 235-page report, published after redacting the names of witnesses and the accused, notes that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by about 10 to 15 male producers, directors, and actors who dominate and exert control over the industry.

The report of the three-member panel headed by a former judge of the Kerala High Court and set up by the state government in 2017, was submitted to the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government in December 2019, but was made public only this month.

Following the report, actor Mohanlal resigned as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) in the wake of the Justice Hema Committee report and sexual harassment allegations faced by some members of the executive committee.

On August 25, the Kerala government announced the establishment of a seven-member special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the case.
