‘Said out of sadness, respect filmmakers’ freedom’: Jishad on Mohanlal’s Jailer 2 scene cut reaction

Kochi: Costume designer Jishad Shamsudeen has clarified his recent emotional outburst over the reduction of superstar Mohanlal's screen time in the newly released film ‘Jailer 2’. In a statement shared on social media, Jishad explained that his initial remarks stemmed purely from his feelings as an ardent fan of the actor, whilst affirming that he fully respects the creative freedom of the filmmakers.
Jishad noted that seeing the actor's scenes cut was disappointing on a personal level, but reiterated his understanding of the post-production process as an industry professional. “What I expressed yesterday came purely from the heart of a devoted Lalettan fan. As someone who admires him deeply, it was naturally disheartening to see his portions reduced.
“At the same time, as a technician in this industry, I wholeheartedly respect the creative process and the autonomy of the filmmakers,” he wrote.
The controversy arose following the worldwide release of ‘Jailer 2’, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and starring Rajinikanth. Jishad had previously expressed disappointment over the edits, stating that although Mohanlal’s presence was trimmed to just two seconds in the trailer, he had remained confident in his work. However, upon viewing the final cut, he discovered that three distinct looks created for Mohanlal had been edited out entirely, and even the brief trailer scene had been further trimmed.
Jishad had initially called the reduction of a superstar's scenes “completely unnecessary” and asserted that he would not participate in any future installment of the franchise, apologising to those who had placed their trust in him. He maintained that his work was driven by a commitment to fans and cinema rather than commercial gains, box-office clubs or stardom. His statements sparked widespread debate online.
‘Jailer 2’, produced by Sun Pictures and starring Rajinikanth in his return as Muthuvel Pandian, received a massive theatrical release across 800 screens in Kerala.
