‘Kamal and I want to do a film together’: Rajinikanth confirms possible reunion after 46 years

Superstar Rajinikanth has confirmed that he is in discussions to reunite with fellow Tamil cinema icon Kamal Haasan for a long-awaited film project — their first on-screen collaboration in nearly 46 years.
Speaking to reporters at Chennai airport on Wednesday, the veteran actor said the project will be jointly produced by Haasan’s banner Raaj Kamal Films International and Red Giant Movies.
“We are going to do a film with Raaj Kamal Films International and Red Giant Movies. The director has not yet been decided. Kamal and I want to do a film together. If we get a story and role, we will act,” the 74-year-old actor said.
While the script and director are still being finalised, the announcement has already stirred major excitement among fans, marking a potential comeback pairing that Tamil cinema hasn’t seen since the late 1970s.
Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan last shared screen space in the 1979 fantasy film Alavuddinum Athbutha Vilakkum. The duo also starred together in iconic films like 16 Vayathinile (1977), Aval Appadithan, and Ninaithale Inikkum (both released in 1979).
The news comes as both stars remain active on screen. Rajinikanth is currently working on Jailer 2, the sequel to his 2023 blockbuster Jailer, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The two also recently teamed up for Coolie, which hit theatres this August.
Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan was last seen in Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, which released in June this year.
