Political gamble backfiring for Vijay? TVK rally, ‘Jana Nayagan’ delay, divorce case deepen turmoil

Tamil superstar Vijay, who has announced plans to step away from cinema and plunge fully into politics, appears to be navigating one of the most challenging phase of his career.
One of the highest-paid actors in Tamil cinema and widely regarded as a star capable of carrying the industry on his shoulders, Vijay declared his political entry with ambitious plans. However, since making that decision, difficulties have surfaced not only in his public and cinematic life but now in his personal life as well.
Vijay has launched his own party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), with the stated aim of capturing power in Tamil Nadu and becoming Chief Minister. As part of his political outreach, he announced statewide rallies. But tragedy struck during a weekend rally in Karur, where 41 people lost their lives in a stampede. The manner in which the incident was handled is said to have dented his public image.
In connection with the incident, Vijay was questioned in a case reportedly taken up by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Around the same time, his much-anticipated Pongal release, Jana Nayagan — described as his final film before his full-time political shift — was stalled.
The film has reportedly run into legal hurdles involving the censor board, and producers are said to be attempting negotiations to ensure its theatrical release. With elections approaching, observers suggest that the prospects of an immediate release appear uncertain.
Amid these developments, Vijay’s personal life has also entered the public domain. Details emerging from a divorce petition filed by his wife have sparked discussion, including allegations of an extramarital relationship with an actress.
The divorce petition was filed by his wife, Sankgeetha Sornalingam, before the Chengalpattu court. The case is scheduled to be heard on April 20, and Vijay has reportedly been directed to appear before the court.
With successive political setbacks and increasing scrutiny of his private life, Vijay finds himself at crossroads. Particularly at a time when political rivals are poised to turn every development into a campaign issue, the coming months could prove decisive for the actor-turned-politician.
