Censor Board did not leak 'Jana Nayagan'; PIB dismisses claims as 'baseless and misleading'

# Entertainment Desk

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has formally denied widespread speculation claiming that Vijay’s upcoming and final film ‘Jana Nayagan’ was leaked online through the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Rumours had circulated suggesting that the print may have emerged from the board at a politically sensitive moment ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

While some social media users framed the leak as a deliberate attempt to undermine Vijay’s public image, others suggested it may have stemmed from an inadvertent lapse. The PIB, however, has dismissed these theories outright.

PIB issues clarification on X

Addressing the claims on Saturday, the PIB published an official statement on X, insisting reports of CBFC involvement were unfounded.

PIB wrote, "Reports claiming that the Tamil film Jana Nayagan was leaked from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) are baseless and misleading. CBFC has clarified that it follows a secure KDM (Key Delivery Message) system for all theatrical films submitted for certification. Access to the content is password-protected, and the KDM remains solely with the producer/filmmaker. Without a valid KDM, the film cannot be accessed or viewed."

The bureau further emphasised that the certified file was returned well in advance.

It added, "The DCP (Digital Cinema Package) of Jana Nayagan was handed over to the applicant in Mumbai on 17 March with due acknowledgement, and has remained with them since."

No accusations from Vijay or KVN Productions

Despite ongoing tensions between the production house and the censor board over delays in certification, neither KVN Productions nor actor Vijay has accused the CBFC of involvement in the leak. The makers have been vocal about the impact of the certification delay on the film’s release timeline, but have refrained from attributing blame for the unauthorised circulation.

Producer warns of legal action

Following the emergence of the leaked clip online, the producers issued a strong warning to those circulating the pirated footage. They described the incident as a grave breach of digital security and confirmed that a forensic probe is under way to identify the source of the leak.

The notice also stated that stringent legal measures will be taken against individuals sharing or forwarding the leaked material.

A five-minute clip from ‘Jana Nayagan’, featuring Vijay’s introduction scene and part of a song, surfaced online earlier this week, sparking significant outrage from the film fraternity.

CBFC delays and stalled release

‘Jana Nayagan’ was originally slated for release on 9 January 2026, but the plan was derailed after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) declined to grant clearance, citing concerns that certain scenes could provoke public unrest. After an extended legal tussle, the filmmakers agreed to submit the project to a revising committee. However, there has been no formal update on whether certification has since been granted.

A scheduled screening was recently called off after a member of the committee reportedly fell ill, further delaying the process. According to industry insiders, approval may only come after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with Vijay currently entering the political arena through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Vijay’s final film before political move

Directed by H Vinoth and backed by KVN Productions, ‘Jana Nayagan’ has been mounted on a reported budget of ₹500 crore. The film features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Priyamani alongside Vijay. Music has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while cinematography is handled by Sathyan Sooryan.

Since early January, the film has been entangled in certification-related complications, fuelling speculation, repeated delays and political debate. Vijay had earlier hinted at a “conspiracy” behind the prolonged impasse, alleging interference by those in power and claiming that reports about his personal life were strategically circulated during the election period.
