‘Our relationship remains intact, he won't do anything that stops my creative flow’: Vetrimaaran on Dhanush

Filmmaker Vetrimaaran has officially confirmed that his upcoming film with Silambarasan TR will be set in the same universe as his 2018 gangster drama Vada Chennai, though it is not a sequel (Vada Chennai 2). Addressing speculation that actor Dhanush demanded ₹20 crore to allow the project, Vetrimaaran clarified the situation in a video posted on his YouTube channel. He revealed that Dhanush, who starred in and produced Vada Chennai, was fully supportive of the new project being set in the same world and immediately granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC), stating he didn’t expect any payment.
Vetrimaaran explained that he had offered Dhanush two options — to make the film either within the Vada Chennai universe or as a standalone story — and Dhanush encouraged him to choose whatever best suited his creative vision. He also dismissed rumours of any rift, emphasising their strong personal and professional bond.
"A film or an incident will never affect our relationship. He would never interfere with my creative process and always encourages me to maintain a clear headspace,” stated the national award winning director.
Additionally, Vetrimaaran addressed the status of Vaadivaasal, his highly anticipated collaboration with actor Suriya. He clarified that the project has not been shelved but is currently delayed due to script development and the need for technical planning to ensure safety during filming involving animals.
Meanwhile, Dhanush’s latest film Kuberaa, also starring Nagarjuna and Rashmika Mandanna and directed by veteran filmmaker Sekhar Kammula, has received critical acclaim and is currently running in theatres, notching up impressive collections.
