OTT releases this week: Cocktail 2, Backrooms, Main Vaapas Aaunga and more

The second week of August brings a diverse slate of films and series to streaming platforms, spanning romantic dramas, psychological thrillers, documentaries, crime stories and family-centric narratives. From José Mourinho’s three-part documentary to the return of popular shows and several new Indian films, here are the OTT releases to watch this week.

Mourinho

Football fans can get an intimate look at the life and career of José Mourinho in the three-part documentary series ‘Mourinho’, which releases on Netflix on August 11. Beyond his celebrated victories, including FC Porto’s UEFA Champions League triumph, the series examines the man behind Mourinho’s tactical brilliance, controversial leadership style and memorable touchline persona. The documentary also features interviews with football figures including Alex Ferguson, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eden Hazard.

Kaun Banega Crorepati (Season 18)

Amitabh Bachchan returns as host for the 18th season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, which will premiere on SonyLIV on August 10. The new season is expected to put greater emphasis on strategic thinking, reasoning and decision-making, moving beyond questions based purely on factual recall.

My Brilliant Career

Based on Miles Franklin’s landmark 1901 novel, ‘My Brilliant Career’ follows Sybylla Melvyn, a young Australian woman determined to build a life around her ambitions rather than conform to expectations of marriage. The drama, starring Philippa Northeast as Sybylla alongside Christopher Chung and Anna Chancellor, will premiere on Netflix on August 13.

A Child Of My Own

Mexican filmmaker Maite Alberdi directs ‘A Child Of My Own’, a hybrid documentary that centres on Alejandra, a newly married woman who longs to become a mother. Under growing pressure surrounding motherhood, she resorts to pretending that she is pregnant. The 2026 film, written by Julián Loyola and Esteban Student, will stream on Netflix from August 13.

Don’t Say Good Luck

Directed by Julia Hart, ‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ is a musical comedy-drama about a teenager whose dreams of performing collide with a devastating family crisis. Sophie Birenbaum plays a high school student who lands the lead role in her school's production of Waitress, only to have her excitement overshadowed when her mother's cancer returns. The film will be available on Netflix from August 14.

Cocktail 2

‘Cocktail 2’ brings Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna together in a romantic comedy-drama directed by Homi Adajania. A spiritual follow-up to the 2012 film Cocktail, the story follows Kunal and Diya as they head to Sicily while dealing with pressure to settle down. Diya's decision to ask her free-spirited friend Ally to test Kunal's loyalty takes an unexpected turn when Ally develops genuine feelings for him. ‘Cocktail 2’ releases on Netflix on August 14.

Main Vaapas Aaunga

Set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition, ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ explores a decades-old romance that resurfaces through a family story marked by separation, grief and longing. The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, Sharvari Wagh and Diljit Dosanjh and began streaming on Netflix on August 7.

Idhayam Murali

Tamil romantic comedy ‘Idhayam Murali’ centres on Idhaya, played by Atharvaa Murali, a reserved man who becomes hesitant about his impending wedding. During a journey, he meets a stranger, played by Fahadh Faasil, and opens up about his experiences with unrequited love from his school days through adulthood. The encounter eventually forces him to confront his past and make a decision about his future. ‘Idhayam Murali’began is streaming on Netflix now.

Flex X Cop (Season 2)

Ahn Bo-hyun returns as wealthy detective Jin I-soo in the second season of the Korean crime drama ‘Flex X Cop’, premiered on JioHotstar on August 7. After completing his police academy training, Jin-I-soo rejoins the Violent Crimes Unit and finds himself reporting to a new team leader, played by Jung Eun-chae. Their contrasting approaches are put to the test when a serial killer case emerges.

Backrooms

Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, ‘Backrooms’ is a sci-fi horror thriller about people who accidentally slip out of ordinary reality and become trapped in an apparently endless maze of deserted, yellow-lit rooms. Their struggle for survival intensifies as an unidentified presence begins hunting them. ‘Backrooms’ started streaming on SonyLIV on August 7.

Nooru Saami

Vijay Antony and Swasika headline ‘Nooru Saami’, a Tamil emotional drama inspired by real-life events. The film explores the powerful relationship between a mother and her son, placing their bond at the centre of its story. ‘Nooru Saami’ premiered on ZEE5 on August 7.

Lenin

Telugu action drama ‘Lenin’ follows an orphan raised by a powerful matriarch alongside her biological son in the village of Sriramapuram. Drawing elements from the Mahabharata, the story unfolds over three decades before Lenin returns to confront the people and power structures responsible for the injustices of his past. ‘Lenin’ began streaming on ZEE5 from August 7.

Vadhandhi (Season 2)

The second season of ‘Vadhandhi’ continues the story of SI Moosa Raaza, played by M Sasikumar, after his transfer to rural Madurai following a prominent case. His new assignment forces him to confront the consequences of an earlier investigation in which he mistakenly sent an innocent man to prison. ‘Vadhandhi Season 2’ is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Presence

Steven Soderbergh's supernatural thriller ‘Presence’ follows a family that moves into an apparently ordinary suburban home, only to begin noticing unexplained occurrences. As they become convinced that something else occupies the house, their everyday lives are thrown into turmoil. The film stars Callina Liang, Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan and Eddy Maday and is streaming on Amazon Prime Video now.

Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story

‘Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story’ revisits some of the major criminal trials in India's recent history through the career of public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. The docu-drama examines his involvement in legal proceedings linked to the 1993 Bombay blasts and the 2008 Mumbai train attacks. ‘Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story’ premiered on JioHotstar on August 7.
