Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, and veteran actress Goldie Hawn were seen wearing creations by Indian designer brand Sabyasachi at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. The brand’s official Instagram page shared images of the two celebrities on the same day, highlighting Sabyasachi’s presence at the prestigious Oscars 2025.

Bajaria donned Sabyasachi clothing, accessorised with statement jewellery from the Sabyasachi High Jewellery collection. Hawn, known for her timeless elegance, complemented her look with a statement necklace from the same collection.

What is Sabyasachi’s global influence?
Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a renowned Indian fashion and jewellery designer with a brand that has expanded globally. The designer’s creations, known for blending traditional Indian craftsmanship with contemporary luxury, have been embraced by international celebrities and high-profile figures.

Marking its 25th anniversary, the Sabyasachi brand recently hosted a star-studded runway show and launched an exclusive high jewellery collection. The company has also announced plans to position itself as India’s first global luxury brand.

How did Sabyasachi build his empire?
Born in Kolkata, West Bengal, on February 23, 1974, Sabyasachi overcame financial hardships. His father, a Bangladeshi refugee, lost his job when plastic replaced jute in the industry. These struggles deeply impacted Mukherjee, leading him to battle depression and even attempt to take his own life. However, he turned his pain into a driving force behind his creative vision.

Establishing the Sabyasachi label in 1999, he gradually built a multi-million-dollar brand. In 2021, Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Limited (ABFRL) acquired a 51% stake in his company for ₹398 crore, a major milestone in his career. Before this, he held 97% ownership, with the remaining 3% belonging to his father. By 2020, the brand had an estimated turnover of ₹275 crore. Today, Sabyasachi’s influence in Indian fashion is unparalleled, with his designs setting trends that many other designers follow.
