‘Only Dasettan and I share this privilege’: Mohanlal on being Kerala’s universal ‘Lalettan’

Even in his 48th year in cinema, the legendary Mohanlal admits to feeling a flutter of nerves before the first shot of a new film. In a candid interview with the Central Government’s MyGov India YouTube channel, the actor reflected on his journey, his unique bond with Malayalis, and his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Regardless of their age, most people in Kerala call me 'Lal ettan (big brother)'. It is a unique privilege that only singer K J Yesudas (Dasettan) and I have received from our people," Mohanlal shared.
Reminiscing about his roots, he spoke of his father, a retired Law Secretary, and a childhood free from pressure. His acting journey began in the sixth grade, playing a 90-year-old man—a performance that won him Best Actor. "My father gave me total freedom, telling me to pursue my passion after my degree," he recalled.
Mohanlal's praise for Modi in the interview has sparked discussions. He remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a "true statesman" and a "visionary leader”. The actor also stated that the Prime Minister's dedication to the nation is "inspiring" and characterised him as someone who prioritises action over words.
