Offensive remarks against Oommen Chandy: Police register case against actor Vinayakan

Kochi: The Kerala Police have registered a case against actor Vinayakan in connection with his disparaging remarks against late Congress veteran Oommen Chandy on social media. The case was filed on the basis of a complaint alleging that the actor’s provocative remarks had hurt sentiments and disrespected the dead person. 

The complaint was lodged by DCC general secretary Ajith Ameer Bava and Ernakulam north block Congress committee president Sanal Nediyathara. In addition, Ernakulam North Police have received four other complaints against the actor in this regard.  

In a Facebook live the other day, Vinayakan had slammed the three-day state mourning declared in view of Oommen Chandy’s demise and said, “Who is this Oommen Chandy? Why are there three days (of mourning)? Oommen Chandy died. So what? I’m asking the media to stop it (news coverage).”

Subsequently, several netizens including Congress activists slammed Vinayakan for his comments and demanded to register a case against the actor. They also demanded an apology from the actor, who later deleted the video from Facebook.

Meanwhile, Vinayakan has also lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Youth Congress activists vandalised his apartment near Kaloor Stadium in Kochi. The attack reportedly took place around 3.30 pm on Thursday. 

According to reports, some Youth Congress activists, chanting slogans in honour of late Oommen Chandy, barged into his flat, broke the windows and attempted to break the door. Following which, they were stopped by police officers and security guards, stated the complaint.
