Odia singer Humane Sagar dies at 36 after battling severe illness

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is mourning the untimely death of its popular singer Humane Sagar, who passed away on Monday night while receiving treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, the hospital confirmed. He was 36.

Sagar had been admitted to AIIMS on Friday after being diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, acute chronic liver failure (ACLF), multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and other severe health complications. Despite receiving intensive care from a team of specialist doctors, he succumbed to his illnesses at 9.08 pm, the hospital bulletin said.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his grief over the singer’s passing. He said, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of renowned playback singer Humane Sagar. His demise is an irreparable loss to our music and cinema. I convey my condolences to the bereaved family and pray to God for the peace of the departed soul. Om Shanti.”

Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik also paid tribute, stating that Sagar's “soulful music has touched the hearts of countless listeners”, and adding that his contributions to Odia music will always remain memorable. “Along with praying for the eternal peace of his immortal soul, I convey my condolences to the bereaved family members during this sorrowful time,” he said.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar clarified that Sagar had not responded to aggressive treatment despite all efforts by the medical team. His conditions included severe respiratory failure, dilated cardiomyopathy with LV dysfunction, anuric acute kidney injury, encephalopathy, hepatopathy, thrombocytopenia and coagulopathy.

Born in Titlagarh, Bolangir district, Sagar was a celebrated singer in the Odia music industry, renowned for his emotional expression and distinctive singing style. Over his career, he lent his voice to more than 100 Odia songs, leaving a lasting legacy.
