Mollywood to make history: Inches closer to Rs 1000 crore club

In a historic milestone for Malayalam cinema, the industry is on the brink of grossing close to Rs 1000 crores (10 billion) with its latest releases. With an impressive cumulative collection of Rs 985 crores from January to April this year, Mollywood is on to surpass the Rs 1000 crore mark, with the upcoming releases of ‘Turbo’ and ‘Guruvayoor Ambalanadail’.

The growing success of Malayalam cinema is emphasised by its significant contribution to the Indian film industry; 20 percent of the gross collection in 2024. Bollywood has only collected a mere 38 percent share.

The gross collection of Malayalam cinema was around Rs 500 crores last year which saw the success of ‘2018’, ‘Romancham’, ‘Kannur Squad’, ‘RDX’ and 'Neer'. However, in just six months thís year, the industry has almost doubled its earnings, nearing the Rs 1000 crore mark with the release of a mere eight films.

A significant portion of this revenue is generated from markets outside Kerala. ‘Manjummel Boys’, released without dubbing, amassed an amount of Rs 100 crores from Tamil Nadu alone. The film also made history by becoming the first Malayalam film to collect one million dollars in the United States, while also collecting close to Rs 10 crores in Karnataka.

Malayalam films have also resonated in international markets, with successes like ‘Premalu’, ‘Bhramayugam’, and ‘Aadujeevitham’ gaining success among foreign audiences.
