David Jonsson is the new Black Panther: Ryan Coogler returns to direct in Marvel's Phase Six sequel

San Diego: Marvel Studios has officially announced that British rising star David Jonsson will lead the upcoming superhero sequel 'Black Panther 3'. The film is officially scheduled to land exclusively in cinemas on December 15, 2028.

Stepping Into the Mantle

During Marvel's high-profile San Diego Comic-Con presentation, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler took to the stage to confirm his return to the director's chair. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonsson will portray an aged-up version of Prince T'Challa II, the young son of King T'Challa (originally played by the late Chadwick Boseman) and Nakia, who was first introduced during the post-credits sequence of 2022's 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.'

Given that the character was introduced as a young child, Coogler noted that the narrative will feature a time jump, allowing Jonsson's character to come of age and step forward to inherit his father's royal legacy.

A Rising British Talent

Jonsson, widely acclaimed for his standout performances in the BBC/HBO series 'Industry', the sci-fi horror film 'Alien: Romulus', and the psychological thriller 'The Long Walk', received a standing ovation from the Hall H crowd following the reveal. While plot specifics remain under strict wraps, Deadline notes that production is set to utilise large-format celluloid, with Coogler steering the trilogy capper as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Six expansion.
