9 superhits amid 150 flops: Malayalam film industry’s stark 2025 reality

Kochi: Despite a handful of record-breaking successes, the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce has revealed a sobering reality for the Malayalam film industry in 2025. According to newly released figures, 150 out of the 185 films released last year ended in financial failure, resulting in a staggering total loss of 530 crore rupees.
The Success vs Failure Breakdown
The Chamber’s report provides a detailed breakdown of the industry’s performance over the past twelve months:
Total Releases: 185 new films (plus 8 re-releases).
Superhits: 9 films.
Hits: 16 films.
Investment Recovery: 10 films managed to break even by supplementing average theatrical collections with OTT revenue.
Failures: 150 films failed to recover their costs.
The total investment for new productions in 2025 was estimated at 860 crore rupees. Once the profits and break-even projects are factored out, the industry is left with a net deficit of 530 crore rupees.
Re-release Trends and Industry Disputes
While 2025 saw a surge in the popularity of re-releasing classic Malayalam films, the trend did not always translate into financial success. Of the eight old films returned to the big screen, only three managed to create a significant impact at the box office.
The Chamber’s figures have also reignited a debate within the industry. Earlier, the Producers Association released a conflicting report claiming only 15 films were profitable and estimating total losses at a lower figure of 360 crore rupees. The Film Chamber has notably declined to publish the specific names of the successful films, further fueling the controversy.
Statement from the Film Chamber
In a statement shared on social media, the Film Chamber reflected on the year:
"2025 was a year of great experimentation and high expectations for Malayalam cinema. While we celebrated several 'industry hits' and saw audiences embrace diverse themes, the sheer volume of losses remains a grave concern. However, the success of a few unique films proves that the audience is ready for fresh storytelling. With a handful of excellent projects already in the works for 2026, there is still great hope for the future of our cinema."
