Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant has demanded that the upcoming historical drama 'Chhaava' be screened for historians and scholars before its release, warning that if any objections are raised, the film "will not be allowed to release."

Produced by Maddock Films, 'Chhaava' is a period drama based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the valiant Maratha ruler and son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Starring Vicky Kaushal in the lead role, the film chronicles his reign from his coronation in 1681. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the movie also features Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in pivotal roles.

Objections Over a Controversial Scene

Samant expressed concerns about a particular scene depicting Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj dancing, urging the filmmakers to remove it before the film's release.

"The movie shows Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj dancing. The director should cut this part. This movie should be shown to historians and scholars. If they raise objections, we will not let it be released," Samant stated.

Call for Historical Accuracy

Earlier, Samant had taken to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the effort of bringing Sambhaji Maharaj’s story to the big screen. However, he stressed the need for historical accuracy and respect, warning that any offensive or inaccurate content would not be tolerated.

"It is a matter of joy that a Hindi film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the protector of religion and freedom, is being made. Such efforts are necessary to bring his history to the world. However, concerns have been raised about certain objectionable scenes. Our stand is clear -- this film should not be released without first being reviewed by experts and knowledgeable individuals. Any content that harms the honour of the Maharaj will not be tolerated," Samant stated.

Minister Warns of Possible Ban

Samant further warned that if filmmakers do not address concerns, the movie's release could be blocked.

"The producers and directors must take immediate action to remove any objectionable content. A further decision will be taken after watching the film. Otherwise, this film will not be allowed to release," he said.

Described as a “stirring tale of a courageous warrior”, ‘Chhaava’ aims to shed light on the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his historic reign. However, the film has now found itself at the centre of a debate over historical authenticity, with calls for scrutiny before its release.
