‘The climax doesn’t suit a star like me’: Lal Jose reveals why Vijay rejected Meesa Madhavan remake

Renowned director Lal Jose recently revealed on a talk show on Safari TV the reason behind the shelving of the Tamil remake of his hit Malayalam film Meesa Madhavan, which was originally set to star Tamil superstar Vijay. According to Lal Jose, the project was abandoned due to disagreements over the film's climax.

Meesa Madhavan, which became a massive success in Malayalam, featured an ensemble cast including Dileep, Kavya Madhavan, and Jagathy Sreekumar. The film's overwhelming success led producer Appachan to approach Vijay to reprise the lead role in the Tamil version. However, after watching the original, Vijay reportedly had reservations about the film’s ending, believing it did not suit a superstar of his stature.

Lal Jose explained that Vijay felt the climax of Meesa Madhavan was more suited to an emerging star, not someone of his established fame. Vijay, according to the director, told him, “The climax doesn’t fit a star like me; it’s not heavy enough. I would prefer a more impactful climax.”

Despite the initial enthusiasm surrounding the project, the differences over the climax led to the cancellation of the Tamil remake. Lal Jose’s comments shed light on how an actor's star power, in this case, Vijay’s, can influence the direction of a film’s adaptation, ultimately causing what could have been a dream project to fall apart.
