Kriti Sanon, who recently won the National Award for Best Actor (Female) for her stellar performance in Mimi, was a featured speaker at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2024 in Goa. During a panel discussion on the theme "Empowering Change: Women Leading the Way in Cinema," Sanon shared insights about her career, future aspirations, and the evolving landscape of female-driven storytelling in the film industry.

The bold choice of ‘Mimi’

Reflecting on her journey, Kriti called Mimi the boldest decision of her career.

“Many people advised me against choosing this film. They were concerned I’d be typecast as someone who only does art-house projects, which might limit my opportunities,” she said. However, her connection to the heartfelt script pushed her to take the leap.

“This script touched my heart, and that’s what should matter most when selecting projects,” she explained.

The risk proved worthwhile as her performance in Mimi not only earned her critical acclaim but also the prestigious National Award.

On exploring negative roles and grey characters

Kriti expressed her eagerness to take on more challenging roles, including playing a superwoman or a character with darker shades. Speaking about the growing acceptance of morally complex female characters, she said, “Audiences today appreciate grey characters. They resonate with them, and the industry’s perception is changing.”

"The male gaze no longer demands a ‘perfect’ woman in every story," she added.

She also highlighted the intricacies of her recent performances. Talking about her role in Do Patti, she described it as “layered and nuanced” and said stories like those, especially touching on domestic violence, deeply resonate with her.

Additionally, Kriti reflected on her role as a robot in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, admitting, “Playing a perfectly straight-faced robot was one of my toughest challenges, but I’m glad it was well-received.”

Celebrating female writers and OTT platforms

The actor voiced her admiration for the new wave of female writers in the industry, many of whom have found their footing through OTT platforms.

“The OTT revolution has given female filmmakers an incredible reach, allowing their stories to resonate in hundreds of countries,” Kriti said.

She acknowledged the significance of this shift in storytelling, pointing out that diverse perspectives are reshaping narratives in the industry.

“Women should focus on growing and giving their 100 percent. Stay curious, ask questions, and keep pushing boundaries," she concluded.
