Director Karthik Subbaraj has moved on to his next projects after the release of the Suriya-starrer Retro, which opened to mixed reviews. The maverick director, well known for his unique storytelling, is also a great fan of Malayalam cinema and closely follows the work being done in this part of the world.

In a recent conversation with Cinema Vikatan, Karthik opened up about his admiration for Basil Joseph, both as an actor and director.

“After watching Minnal Murali, I spoke to Tovino Thomas, who put me in touch with Basil. We had a small conversation, and I congratulated him on the movie,” recollected Karthik.

“It’s not just his direction that impressed me — I was enthralled to see him as an actor in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey… that was a great performance. So was his act in the recently released Ponman — it was convincing and moving,” the Kollywood director added.

When the interviewer asked Karthik about a potential collaboration with Basil, Karthik quipped that he would definitely like to direct Basil — the actor. It should be noted that Karthik shares a good rapport with Joju George, with whom he worked in movies including Retro and Jagame Thandhiram. Incidentally, Joju too turned director last year with his hit movie Pani.

Meanwhile, as per reports, Basil Joseph will soon be directing a Bollywood superhero movie, likely featuring Ranveer Singh and Wamiqa Gabbi in lead roles.

Take, for example, superstars like Mohanlal, Kamal Haasan, Mammootty, and Rajinikanth — the camaraderie between Mollywood and Kollywood actors has existed for a long time and is sure to continue, given the mutual respect for each other’s work. This friendliness will likely lead to greater creative success, as in the case of Karthik and Basil.
