Kappa CULTR turns into an ‘arcade rave’ with Japanese gaming culture making India debut

Kochi: Kappa CULTR, widely recognised as South India’s biggest music festival, is set to push boundaries once again in 2026, this time by bringing a large-scale gaming experience into the heart of a music festival.

Scheduled at Bolgatty Palace, Kochi, from February 20 to 22, the festival is introducing a first-of-its-kind collaboration that blends live music and Japanese arcade culture, something organisers -- Versus Experience, say has never been attempted at this scale in India before.

For a festival already known for merging global music, food and lifestyle culture, the addition signals an expansion of CULTR’s larger vision: becoming a space where different subcultures meet under one roof.

The idea may sound unusual at first, gaming inside a music festival, but Versus Experience say the crossover feels “natural”.

The team behind the gaming experience comes from deep roots in both esports and music.

“There’s a lot of crossover potential,” Adhithya Mahesh, Director & Head of Marketing at Versus Experience, explained. “Many of us come from music backgrounds. Rhythm, timing and performance exist in both worlds.”

Rather than creating a separate gaming area detached from the festival, the intention is to weave it into the overall CULTR atmosphere.

The “Arcade Rave”: Japanese arcade culture comes to India

At the centre of this collaboration is what Adhithya Mahesh describe as an “arcade rave.” Visitors walking into the gaming zone will find:

  • Authentic arcade machines imported from Japan
  • Live DJ sets happening alongside gameplay
  • Tournament stages with live commentary
  • Free-play zones for casual visitors
  • A space designed to feel like a living subculture, not just an exhibition

“These are not old or nostalgic machines,” Adhithya said. “They are cutting-edge arcade systems currently used in Japan and the US. You won’t find them anywhere else in India.”

The machines have been imported through the Consulate of Japan, Bangalore, adding authenticity to what is being positioned as a rare cultural experience for Indian audiences.

The concept aims to recreate the energy of Japanese arcade spaces -- where music, social interaction and competition blend into one environment.

A first for India’s festival scene

Organisers emphasise that this is not simply another gaming booth at a music event.

According to the team, this format, combining live DJs, professional esports tournaments and arcade gaming inside a major music festival, has not been executed on this scale anywhere in the country.

“This has never been done before,” Adhithya said. “We are not just placing video games inside a music space. We are integrating them.”

The result is a multi-sensory experience where the sounds of arcade machines, live DJs and game commentary collide, creating an atmosphere that mirrors the energy of both rave culture and esports arenas.

What visitors can expect at the Kappa CULTR 2026?

The gaming segment, known as The Versus Experience, will run across all three festival days.

Four official competitions will take place:

Competitions begin from 4 pm on Friday, with finals for all games scheduled for Day 3. Free-play sessions will also be open for those who simply want to experience the games without competing.

Participants can register online and in person, while casual visitors are free to walk in and explore the experience.

Live artist performances inside the gaming zone will begin at 7 pm daily, further blending gaming and music culture.

The experience will introduce audiences to a lesser-known side of esports.

While mainstream mobile games dominate India’s gaming market, organisers describe competitive fighting games as the “chess equivalent” of esports, focused on strategy, rhythm and one-on-one skill rather than mass multiplayer gameplay.

“This is about awareness,” they explained. “It’s about showing children, teenagers and even parents that gaming can be strategic, cultural and even career-driven.”

International recognition is already part of the setup, with professional players from Canada and Australia expected to participate, making the competition globally connected from day one.

All matches will also be live-streamed, giving global audiences a window into what is happening at Kappa CULTR.

Why CULTR is the perfect platform

For Versus Experience, Kappa CULTR’s identity as a celebration of subcultures made the collaboration an easy decision.

“Kappa does a great job of putting a spotlight on different cultures,” the Adhithya said. “People are going to be surprised at how big this community actually is.”

The festival’s audience, known for embracing music, art, fashion and lifestyle experiences, provides the ideal environment for introducing arcade culture to a broader crowd.

Instead of positioning gaming as separate entertainment, the experience aligns with CULTR’s evolving image as a festival that brings global influences and niche cultures into one shared space.

The bigger picture for Kappa CULTR

The addition of gaming reflects a larger direction for Kappa CULTR itself.

Over the years, the festival has grown beyond music alone, incorporating international food curation, cultural programming and immersive experiences.

By bringing Japanese arcade culture into the mix for the first time, CULTR strengthens its role as a platform where emerging subcultures can find mainstream visibility.

Whether visitors arrive for the music, the food, or the gaming, organisers believe the crossover will create new shared experiences and perhaps even new communities.
