The Tamil romantic drama, written and directed by Balu Mahendra, revolves around Bhagyasshree/Vijaya (Sridevi), who, after an accident, is diagnosed with retrograde amnesia, forgetting everything about her life, including her parents. She is kidnapped and sold to a brothel. On the other hand, Cheenu visits the brother with his friend and comes across Bhagyashree, who has also mentally regressed to a child’s state after the accident. Cheenu realises that she was kidnapped, pushed into the brothel, and belonged to a good family. He rescues her from there and gives her treatment, until one day when she regains her memory, only to forget Cheenu and everything that happened to her after the accident. Haasan and Mahendra won the National Film Award for Best Actor and Best Cinematography. The film was later remade into Hindi as ‘Sadma’ by Mahendra, with the same leading pair.
Varumayin Niram Sigappu

Tamil filmmaker K. Balachander directed Haasan and Sridevi in ‘Varumayin Niram Sigappu’, a drama film that was simultaneously shot in Telugu as ‘Aakali Rajyam’. It also starred actors Pratap Pothen, S. Ve. Shekher, and R. Dilip in supporting roles. The film’s story surrounds three unemployed men who are struggling to survive in Delhi. Haasan and Sridevi played Rangan and Devi’s characters, respectively. A commercial and critical success, the movie was later remade in Hindi as ‘Zara Si Zindagi’ by Balachander.
