Johnny Depp’s ‘Ebenezer’ trailer is here: ‘A Christmas Carol’ gets a chilling horror twist

Johnny Depp is set to make his return to a major Hollywood studio film with ‘Ebenezer’, a dark and spooky reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale ‘A Christmas Carol’. Paramount Pictures has unveiled the second trailer for the Ti West directorial, offering a closer look at Depp’s sinister take on the iconic miser Ebenezer Scrooge.
The film’s tagline, “The name you know, the story you don’t,” hints at a darker interpretation of the familiar story. The new trailer leans heavily into horror, with Scrooge confronted by terrifying supernatural forces. The character is seen being haunted by ghosts and even facing the horrifying prospect of being buried alive.

West, who is known for his work on the horror trilogy ‘X’, ‘Pearl’ and ‘MaXXXine’, appears to be giving Dickens’ beloved Christmas story a distinctly unsettling treatment. While the original tale follows Scrooge’s transformation after he is visited by three spirits on Christmas Eve, ‘Ebenezer’ appears to explore the more frightening elements of the story.
Depp leads an ensemble cast that includes Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen.
Johnny Depp’s Hollywood comeback
‘Ebenezer’ also marks a significant return for Depp, who has not appeared in a Hollywood studio film since ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ in 2018.
His absence from major studio productions followed his highly publicised legal battle with his former wife Amber Heard. Depp and Heard accused each other of domestic abuse and defamation during their relationship. In the 2022 US defamation trial, a jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, while Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages.
Depp was subsequently dropped from the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise, with ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ releasing in 2022 without him.
With ‘Ebenezer’, Depp now returns to the Hollywood studio system in a role that puts him at the centre of a familiar story with a horror-driven twist.
When and where to watch ‘Ebenezer’
‘Ebenezer’ is scheduled to arrive in theatres on November 13, 2026, with Paramount Pictures backing the release.
Depp is also set to star in ‘Day Drinker’, a thriller from Lionsgate alongside Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz. The film is currently scheduled for release in March 2027.
