The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to immediately issue a "U/A" certificate to the Tamil political thriller "Jana Nayagan," paving the way for the theatrical release of the final film from superstar-politician Vijay.

Justice P.T. Asha delivered the verdict on the morning of January 9, 2026, ruling that the board’s last-minute attempt to refer the film for a second review was without jurisdiction. The court observed that once the producers had complied with 27 specific modifications recommended by the initial examining committee, the issuance of the certificate should have been a mandatory administrative step.

When will it be released?

Despite the favourable legal ruling, the film did not hit theatres on its scheduled Friday date. Industry sources say a 24-48-hour buffer would still be required for distribution, censor stamping, and logistical alignment, effectively making a 9 January release unviable.

The logistical bottleneck centres on the distribution of Key Delivery Messages (KDMs), the encrypted digital keys required to unlock the film for projection in modern theatres. With the legal verdict only arriving on the morning of the intended premiere, distributors faced an impossible window to transmit these keys and ship digital drives to approximately 5,000 screens worldwide.

The production house, KVN Productions, had already issued an official statement late Wednesday, postponing the release due to "unavoidable circumstances." While the court’s order removes the primary legal barrier, the producers have yet to confirm a new premiere date, as they must now coordinate the massive global rollout originally timed for the Pongal festival holidays.

The legal dispute and board overreach

The legal impasse began when a single dissenting member of the five-person examining committee filed a private complaint with the CBFC Chairperson, alleging that the film could hurt religious sentiments. This complaint led the board to halt the certification process on January 5, despite a majority of the committee having already approved the film for a "U/A" rating.

Justice Asha’s ruling criticised this delay, noting that the secret complaint appeared to be an "afterthought" and that the chairperson’s decision to override the majority was an overreach of authority. The court’s intervention has brought relief to millions of fans who have been rallying online with hashtags like #WeStandWithTHALAPATHY, viewing the film as a landmark event before Vijay’s full-time transition into Tamil Nadu politics.

CBFC up for appeal

Immediately following the single-judge bench’s order to grant the "U/A" certificate, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) moved to challenge the decision. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) ARL Sundaresan made an urgent mention before a bench led by Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, seeking an immediate listing of the board's appeal. The Chief Justice noted that while the court would consider the motion, the board must first formally file the appeal.
