James Franco has returned to social media after years away from the spotlight, but his comeback has taken an unexpected turn. The actor has spent weeks teasing what he describes as a mysterious discovery involving an alleged extraterrestrial sighting on his property, leaving the internet divided over whether he has uncovered something extraordinary or is simply staging an elaborate stunt.

Since launching his TikTok account in June, Franco has posted a series of cryptic videos claiming that he has been followed, monitored and pressured to stay silent. The actor has repeatedly insisted that his claims are genuine, while many viewers remain sceptical and suspect the entire episode could be connected to an upcoming creative project.

James Franco’s mysterious TikTok comeback

Franco, who largely stepped away from public platforms after facing sexual misconduct allegations in 2018, made his unexpected return to social media on June 3 with a new TikTok account. In his first video, the actor appeared to address doubts about whether the account was actually his, assuring followers that he was not using artificial intelligence or a fake profile.

“I can’t say too much right now. But stick around and I promise it will all make sense,” he wrote in the caption of the post.

The video immediately sparked curiosity, with viewers questioning whether Franco’s unusual posts were part of a publicity campaign, a performance project or something else entirely. Franco himself appeared to anticipate the speculation, saying that people might think he was behaving strangely but insisting that there was no act involved.

“I maybe seem crazy, like, why? What’s going on? What’s the gimmick? No. This is real,” he said.

Over the following weeks, Franco continued sharing videos that appeared increasingly mysterious. Often dressed in the same blue T-shirt, with the name “Bruce Robins” and a taped-on pause symbol visible on his clothing, the actor spoke about feeling watched and warned that something might happen to him.

The alien footage claim

The mystery intensified when Franco revealed that his warnings were linked to an alleged encounter with an alien on his property. He claimed he had footage of the incident and promised to release it on July 13.

In one video posted on June 25, Franco said his account had been targeted and that people were attempting to prevent him from sharing what he had discovered.

“OK, they hacked my account. I got it back. They want me to stop. People think I’m acting crazy. Whatever. I’m not acting crazy. I saw something. They tried to hack my account and I got it back,” he said. “They don’t want me to show what I’m gonna show. I’m gonna show it. I already told you, 7/13.”

As anticipation grew, fans began debating whether Franco was documenting a genuine experience or creating an elaborate online mystery. Some viewers suggested that the strange videos resembled a viral marketing campaign, while others questioned whether the actor was attempting to blur the line between reality and fiction.

The big reveal leaves viewers unconvinced

When July 13 arrived, Franco finally shared the footage he had been promoting for weeks. In the video, he appeared to show security camera recordings from his property on a laptop.

The black-and-white clips showed what appeared to be a humanoid figure with an unusual face moving around outside a house. The figure could be seen near trees, approaching doors and appearing close to windows, creating the impression of an alien-like presence captured on camera.

Introducing the footage, Franco said he felt compelled to share it despite attempts to stop him.

“The day is here,” Franco said. “I promised you I was gonna reveal something, because I found something. It was thrust upon me, I didn’t ask for this.

“I’ve been through a lot, I went on social media, I didn’t want to do that, I didn’t choose this… I saw something and I thought, ‘you know what? I can’t keep this quiet.’”

He also repeated his claims that his account had been compromised and that others wanted him to stop releasing the material.

However, the footage did little to convince many viewers. Several social media users argued that the figure looked like a person wearing an alien costume, while others joked that they were still waiting to discover the real reason behind the unusual campaign.

“Clearly fake but I’ll say it again, I’m excited for whatever movie this is for,” one user commented.

Another wrote, “God damnit James Franco, you made us wait for this?!”

The video ended with a message promising more material would be released.

“A lot more footage dropping soon! It gets very crazy!!!”

Is it a film promotion or an internet performance?

The possibility that Franco’s alien storyline is connected to a film project has become one of the most discussed theories among fans. The actor does have upcoming projects, including ‘John Rambo’, a prequel starring Noah Centineo, and filmmaker Vincent Gallo’s ‘Golden State Killer’. However, neither project has been officially linked to aliens or the TikTok mystery.

Some viewers believe Franco is creating a performance piece that mixes entertainment with online storytelling, while others remain unsure whether there is more to the story.

Filmmaker Christian Guiton reportedly pushed back against theories suggesting the videos were connected to a movie promotion, though speculation continues across social media.

The actor’s unusual online return has also attracted attention because of his limited presence in mainstream entertainment in recent years. Following the 2018 allegations, Franco largely stayed away from major film and television appearances. His last major film role was in the Coen brothers’ Netflix anthology ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’, while his HBO series ‘The Deuce’ concluded in 2019.

For now, the question remains unanswered: did James Franco really capture evidence of an alien, or has he created one of the internet’s most elaborate attention-grabbing experiments?
