‘It’s brave for him to do a film like that…’: John Abraham praises Mammootty’s character in ‘Kaathal’

Bollywood actor and producer John Abraham has lauded Malayalam cinema and its leading stars, singling out Mammootty’s performance in ‘Kaathal – The Core’ for special praise.
Speaking during an Idea Exchange session with The Indian Express, the actor called the Malayalam film industry “brave” and said it currently produces the best films in the country.
“That industry is very brave. So, I think as of today, the best films in the country come from the Malayalam film industry. If you ask who my favourite actor is, I would say Mohanlal by light years. I love Meryl Streep also,” John said, expressing admiration for both Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and the Hollywood legend.
Turning his attention to Mammootty, John highlighted the veteran’s decision to portray a gay man in ‘Kaathal – The Core’. “You look at Mammootty playing a politician and you find out in the film that he is gay. I mean, it’s brave for that man to do a film like that,” he said, describing himself as a huge fan of the actor.
John also revealed he has set up a writer’s room in Kerala to develop stories inspired by the Malayalam industry’s distinct storytelling style. “I thought maybe I could borrow from some of their ideas. So, what I did was set up a writer’s room in Kerala. Let’s generate ideas out of there and see films that could be made nationally or only in Malayalam. I want to produce more Malayalam films because it’s the right time, they are fantastic. But, I also want to produce other films,” he said.
Known for its realistic, content-driven narratives that often prioritise substance over spectacle, Malayalam cinema has long been admired by John Abraham. He said the industry’s commitment to authenticity is what makes it stand out in the Indian film landscape.
On the professional front, John was last seen in the political thriller ‘The Diplomat’. His next release, ‘Tehran’, will premiere directly on ZEE5 on August 14.
