In class seven, Mammootty took his first step onto the stage, performing in a school anniversary event. Though initial setbacks—like unavailable costumes—threatened to halt him, a little divine intervention and his father’s support ensured he could perform. For the shadow play inspired by Vailoppilli’s poem Mambazham, he even took on a female role for the first time, demonstrating his early willingness to embrace challenges.

Setbacks fuel determination

High school brought more opportunities, but also more challenges. Roles were often denied despite preparation, yet Mammootty’s resilience only grew. During this period, he also explored writing, creating stories that sharpened his creative discipline and broadened his artistic vision.

Even after finishing school, cinema remained his guiding light. At Thevara S H College, he economised meticulously, saving small amounts from travel fares and meals to watch films, building the tenacity that would later define his career.

Overcoming professional hurdles

Mammootty faced numerous challenges, including being sent back from Madras’ Adyar Film Institute due to logistical issues and initially being denied dubbing opportunities. Yet, through persistence and dedication, he overcame these obstacles to become the megastar beloved by Malayalis worldwide.
