ICC member appears for Ranjith in sexual assault case; AMMA says ‘unaware’

Kochi: Kukku Parameswaran, General Secretary of the actors association AMMA, said she was not aware that the person who appeared in court for the arrested director Ranjith was a member of the film industry’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).
She added that in the case involving the alleged assault of a young actress, the organisation wishes to proceed by placing trust in the judicial system. The matter is being taken very seriously, and AMMA firmly believes that women must have complete safety in workplaces, Kukku Parameswaran said.
Advocate Muhammed Siyad, an ICC member, appeared in court on behalf of Ranjith. Siyad explained that he had resigned from the ICC recently and took up Ranjith’s case as he is a family friend.
Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith was taken into police custody on Tuesday evening in Idukki district following a fresh allegation of attempted sexual assault by a woman actor, authorities confirmed.
The arrest was carried out by the Ernakulam Central Police based on a complaint filed on Monday. The victim, a young actress, alleged that the director attempted to sexually assault her after inviting her into a film set caravan during a recent production.
