Los Angeles: HBO’s long-anticipated Harry Potter television series has officially unveiled its new leading trio. Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout have been cast as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively – stepping into roles that made global stars of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

Announcing the casting on Instagram, the show’s producers welcomed the new leads with a nod to Hogwarts tradition: “Dear Mr. Potter, Miss Granger, and Mr. Weasley: We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please welcome Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley to the HBO Original Series Harry Potter.”

More than 30,000 actors auditioned for the coveted roles following an open casting call launched last autumn, according to Variety.

Showrunner Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials, Succession) and executive producer/director Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones) shared their excitement: “After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.”

The young cast members are relative newcomers. McLaughlin recently filmed the comedy Grow for Sky, co-starring Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel. Stanton previously played the title role in Matilda: The Musical on the West End from 2023 to 2024. For Stout, Harry Potter marks his first major screen role.

They will be joined by a strong supporting cast, including John Lithgow (The Crown) as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (The White Queen) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) as Severus Snape, Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon (Leopoldstadt) as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show) as Argus Filch.

JK Rowling, author of the beloved book series, will serve as an executive producer. HBO has promised the series will be a “faithful adaptation” of the original novels, with each season expected to cover one book in depth.

Production is expected to begin later this year, with a release date anticipated in 2026.
