Actress Hayden Panettiere died at the age of 36 in Greenville, South Carolina, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding her sudden death. Her representative confirmed the news on Sunday, August 16, with her father, Skip Panettiere, remembering her as a beloved daughter and performer who brought joy to many.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," her father, Skip Panettiere, said in a statement her rep shared. "She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, and to the millions who watched her onscreen."

Panettiere became a familiar face on television and film from childhood. After early appearances in projects including ‘Remember the Titans’, ‘Ally McBeal’ and ‘Ice Princess’, she rose to wider prominence as Claire Bennet in NBC's ‘Heroes’. She later played singer Juliette Barnes in ABC's ‘Nashville’, appearing in more than 100 episodes. Her memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’, also explored several difficult chapters of her life.

What happened to Hayden Panettiere?

Panettiere was found unresponsive at Judson Mill Lofts in Greenville on August 16. According to Greenville Police Department Sgt Jonathan Bragg, police and emergency medical personnel were sent to the apartment complex on Easley Bridge Road at about 1:51 pm after an acquaintance contacted emergency services.

Medical assistance was provided at the scene, but Panettiere was pronounced dead there.

Police said their initial investigation has not found evidence suggesting foul play or suspicious circumstances. Greenville County Coroner Mike Ellis also said there were no apparent injuries that would have contributed to her death.

An autopsy was conducted on August 17. However, officials have not yet established a cause or manner of death, with additional examinations and studies still pending.

Was Hayden Panettiere in cardiac arrest?

According to the Greenville County Coroner's Office, Panettiere was in cardiac arrest when first responders and emergency medical personnel arrived.

Emergency personnel attempted advanced cardiac life support measures, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Separately, audio from the 911 call, reported by TMZ, included references to a possible overdose and cardiac arrest. Authorities have not confirmed an overdose as the cause of Panettiere's death, and the official cause remains pending.

Hayden Panettiere's struggles with addiction

Panettiere had previously spoken publicly about her struggles with alcohol and opioid addiction and her efforts to seek treatment. She also discussed postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014.

In her memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’, released earlier this year, the actress wrote about addiction, motherhood, abuse and other experiences that shaped her life.

Her death also comes as an old interview has resurfaced online in which she discussed an alleged sexual exploitation incident from her youth.

What did Hayden Panettiere say about being sexually trafficked?

In an episode of Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast, Panettiere spoke about an incident she said happened when she was 18. She alleged that a female friend she trusted took her to a yacht, where she was instructed to perform sexual acts for a man she described as very famous.

Panettiere said she had trusted the woman and regarded her as a protector, making the alleged betrayal particularly distressing.

“There was no hints of anything like that happening, so it took me by surprise,” the actress said.

She recalled being taken below deck into a small room, where she encountered an undressed man. Panettiere said she immediately realised that something was wrong and attempted to get away from the situation.

“I was like, ‘This is not happening,'” she said.

According to Panettiere, she then tried to remain hidden elsewhere on the yacht because she felt there was no safe way to leave.

“There was no jumping off and swimming away. And there was nobody who was going to be empathetic to my situation. I realized that this was nothing new to them,” Panettiere explained.

Reflecting on the betrayal, she said: “When you really find somebody that you trust, you hold on to them for dear life, and you feel so lucky. So to be betrayed like that is just an awful feeling,”

The account was also discussed in her memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’.

Panettiere's relationship with Brian Hickerson

Panettiere's personal life also included a highly publicised and troubled relationship with actor Brian Hickerson. The pair began dating in 2018 and had an on-and-off relationship that was marked by allegations of domestic violence and arrests.

In February 2020, police alleged that Hickerson struck Panettiere with a closed fist during an incident in Wyoming.

Panettiere later wrote about experiencing physical abuse in her memoir and spoke about how difficult it had been to completely sever ties with an abusive partner.

“Getting an abusive person out of your life is like trying to rip a weed out that is so entangled into your life, and every time you pull it out another weed pops back up and you’re like, I thought I killed this,” she told Us Weekly in May.

She continued, “They always manage to find a way to slither back in, even if you’re an incredibly strong-willed person. What happened in Wyoming helped push me in the right direction, but it still took me a long time. I still struggled to fully put a kibosh to it for a while.”

Who was Hayden Panettiere?

Panettiere began working as a child performer, appearing on ‘One Life to Live’ in 1994. Her subsequent roles in ‘Heroes’, ‘Nashville’ and the ‘Scream’ franchise established her as a prominent television and film actor.

Beyond acting, she used her memoir and interviews to speak openly about addiction, postpartum depression, abusive relationships and difficult experiences from her childhood and early career.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko, as well as her parents.

Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28.

As authorities continue their investigation, an official cause and manner of Hayden Panettiere's death have yet to be determined.
