New Delhi: Actor Govinda has stirred controversy with his claim that he was offered the lead role in James Cameron’s Avatar but declined the offer, despite a massive ₹18 crore paycheck. Speaking on Mukesh Khanna’s YouTube channel, Govinda said he rejected the role due to its physical demands and the character’s portrayal.

According to the actor, he had a chance encounter with a Sardarji in America, which led him to meet Cameron. He even claimed that he suggested the film’s title. "Picture ka title bhi maine hi diya tha" (I had only given the title)," Govinda stated, adding that he had predicted a sequel as well.

Recalling the meeting, Govinda revealed Cameron explained the character’s details, to which he responded, “The hero is lame? Govinda! Hello? I am not doing your picture!" Even when Cameron offered him ₹18 crore for the role, Govinda refused, stating that the 410-day shoot and full-body paint requirement were deal-breakers. "If I paint my body, I will be in the hospital!" he added.

Avatar, which ultimately starred Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, became a global sensation upon its release in 2009. Its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, followed in 2022, with more films in the pipeline.

Govinda’s claim has sparked debates online, with many questioning the legitimacy of his statements. While his career boasts massive Bollywood hits, the idea of him turning down one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters remains a hot topic of discussion.
