Gayatri Joshi, once a familiar face across Indian television screens through a host of popular advertisements, made a dream entry into Bollywood—only to step away from the spotlight shortly after.

Born in Nagpur, Gayatri later moved with her family to Mumbai. It was during her academic years that she ventured into modelling, appearing in campaigns for top brands such as Godrej, Ponds, LG, Bombay Dyeing, Sunsilk, and Philips. Her visibility soared further through music videos featuring legendary singers Jagjit Singh and Hans Raj Hans, making her a well-recognised name in Indian households.

In 1999, she reached the final five of the Miss India pageant and the following year won the Miss India International title. Representing India at the Miss International contest held in Japan, she returned to pursue modelling with renewed vigour. It was her appearance in a Hyundai commercial alongside Shah Rukh Khan that brought her closer to the film industry. Despite numerous offers, Gayatri chose to be selective. That selectiveness led her to Swades, the critically acclaimed film starring Shah Rukh Khan, where she played the female lead.

Her performance in Swades was widely praised, earning her several awards, including the Star Screen Award for Best Newcomer. The film itself has since become a cult classic. With offers to act alongside top Bollywood actors pouring in, Gayatri seemed poised for a successful acting career.

However, everything changed after she met Vikas Oberoi, a billionaire and Managing Director of Oberoi Realty Limited, a leading name in India's real estate sector, valued at an estimated ₹50,000 crore. Shortly after Swades, Gayatri and Vikas married, and she chose to step away from acting.

Reflecting on her decision, Gayatri once said, "I met Vikas soon after Swades. I was content with my career—modelling, acting in ads, and even a film with Shah Rukh. But when I met him, I started thinking about family. I could have returned to acting later, but I’ve always been someone who gives a hundred per cent to whatever I do. That’s why I chose to walk away from films."

Post-marriage, Gayatri joined the board of Oberoi Realty and remains involved in the business alongside her husband, opting for a life away from the arc lights, but by no means out of the spotlight.
