645K tickets sold in 24 hours on BookMyShow; Empuraan sets a new record in Indian cinema

The Prithviraj Sukumaran-directed film L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal, is setting new records in Indian cinema even before its release. The all-India advance ticket booking for the film began on March 21 at 9 AM. Within the first 24 hours, 6,45,000 tickets were sold through the BookMyShow app alone, making it the highest-ever pre-sale for an Indian film. This marks the first time an Indian movie has achieved such a massive ticket sale on BookMyShow within a single day, surpassing previous records held by major Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films.

In booking trends on Friday, the film sold nearly 100,000 tickets within an hour, setting another record. L2: Empuraan is produced under the banners of Lyca Productions, Aashirvad Cinemas, and Sree Gokulam Movies, with Subaskaran, Antony Perumbavoor, and Gokulam Gopalan backing the project.

Written by Murali Gopy, the film is the first in Malayalam cinema to be released in IMAX. It is scheduled for a global release on March 27, with screenings starting from 6 AM Indian tme. The Tamil Nadu distribution is handled by Sree Gokulam Movies, owned by Gokulam Gopalan. Sri Venkateswara Creations, led by Dil Raju, will distribute the film in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, while Anil Thadani’s AA Films will distribute it in North India. Hombale Films, a leading Kannada production and distribution company, will manage the Karnataka distribution.

L2: Empuraan is the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. The film has already achieved over ₹17 crore in pre-sales for overseas bookings, setting another record in Malayalam cinema.

The cast includes Mohanlal in the lead role, alongside Prithviraj, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Jerome Flynn, Baiju, Saikumar, Andrea Tiwari, Abhimanyu Singh, Saniya Iyappan, Fazil, Sachin Khadkar, Naila Usha, Jiju John, Nandu, Murukan Martin, Shivaji Guruvayoor, Manikuttan, Aneesh G Menon, Shivada, Alex O’Neill, Eric Ebany, Karthikeya Dev, Mihail Novikov, Kishore, Sukant, Behzad Khan, Nikhat Khan, Satyajit Sharma, Nayan Bhatt, Shubhangi, and Jais Jose.

The film will release in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada. The cinematography is by Sujith Vaassudev, music by Deepak Dev, editing by Akhilesh Mohan, production design by Mohandas, action choreography by Stunt Silva, and creative direction by Nirmal Sahadev.
