Los Angeles: The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced Tuesday morning, spotlighting a dynamic mix of returning favourites and breakout newcomers across drama, comedy, and limited series categories. With the ceremony set for 14 September, hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze, the race for television’s highest honours is officially underway.

Apple TV+’s dystopian drama ‘Severance’ emerged as the most-nominated show of the year, earning 27 nods for its second season. The series, which explores the eerie divide between work and personal identity, was recognised across major categories including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor (Adam Scott), Lead Actress (Britt Lower), and multiple supporting roles and technical achievements.

Close behind is HBO’s ‘The Penguin’, a gritty limited series set in Gotham’s criminal underworld, which secured 24 nominations. Colin Farrell earned a Lead Actor nod for his portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot, while Cristin Milioti and Ruth Negga were recognised in the Lead and Supporting Actress categories, respectively.

In the comedy realm, ‘The Studio’ made history with 23 nominations, the highest ever for a freshman comedy series. Seth Rogen received his first Lead Actor nomination, alongside nods for writing and directing. The show also swept supporting categories, with Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, and Ike Barinholtz among the cast members honoured.

‘The White Lotus’ continued its Emmy streak with 23 nominations, including recognition for ensemble cast members Walton Goggins, Carrie Coon, and Sam Rockwell. The show’s creator, Mike White, was nominated for writing and directing.

Other standout nominees include ‘The Bear’ (13 nominations), ‘Shrinking’ (7), and ‘The Last of Us’ (16), which earned acting nods for Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. ‘The Pitt’, a medical drama led by Noah Wyle, also made a strong showing with multiple nominations in writing and performance categories.

In the limited series category, ‘Adolescence’, ‘Black Mirror’, ‘Dying for Sex’, and ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ joined ‘The Penguin’ as top contenders. Cate Blanchett, Michelle Williams, and Jake Gyllenhaal were among the stars recognised for their performances.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be held on September 6 and 7. The 77th Annual Emmy Awards, with comedian Nate Bargatze taking on hosting duties, are scheduled to be broadcast live on Sunday, 14 September at 8 p.m. Eastern / 5 p.m. Pacific on CBS. Viewers can also catch the ceremony streaming both live and on demand via Paramount+.
