Dhanush ties knot with Mrunal Thakur in intimate ceremony? What’s the truth behind the viral video

A video circulating widely on social media has fuelled intense speculation that actors Dhanush and Mrunal Thakur have secretly tied the knot in Chennai. The clip, which appears to show the pair participating in a traditional South Indian wedding ceremony, has left fans debating whether the two stars are now married. However, the footage is not what it seems. 

The video shows Dhanush dressed in a classic white-and-gold veshti and matching shirt, while Mrunal appears in a maroon saree. Several major South Indian stars – including Thalapathy Vijay, Dulquer Salmaan, Ajith Kumar, Anirudh Ravichander, Trisha and Shruti Haasan – are seen in the background, adding further weight to the claim of a star-studded yet private ceremony. The clip was widely shared with the assertion that the wedding took place on 22 January in Chennai.

But despite the enthusiasm online, the supposed wedding visuals are entirely fabricated.

Viral clip confirmed as AI-generated

A closer examination of the footage has revealed that the video is AI-generated, not an authentic recording of any real ceremony. Social media users were quick to point out inconsistencies, with one individual noting that Ajith Kumar was in Dubai on the date mentioned in the posts.

The popular Instagram handle @devaimation amplified the confusion by sharing an AI-created reel that gave fabricated details about a supposed hush-hush wedding. The caption read:

“Dhanush and Mrunal Thakur reportedly got married on 22nd January in a close-knit, private family ceremony in Chennai ✨Keeping it low-key and away from the spotlight, the wedding was attended only by family and close friends. Sources reveal that several top Kollywood stars were present to bless the couple, including Trisha Krishnan, Shruti Haasan, Anirudh Ravichander, Vijay Thalapathy, Dulquer Salmaan, and Ajith Kumar. No official photos, no announcements — just this leaked glimpse that has taken the internet by storm Private ceremony. Big emotions. One unforgettable moment.”

The creator added a disclaimer at the end: “Disclaimer: This reel is AI generated and for entertainment and news-style representation only. No official confirmation has been made by the individuals involved.”

The video featured Dhanush and Mrunal seated in front of a ceremonial fire as celebrity guests posed nearby.

Rumours about February wedding also dismissed

Speculation about a possible February wedding had been circulating earlier this month after a report claimed the two actors were planning to marry on Valentine’s Day. Those rumours were also refuted.

A source close to the stars told HT City: “Mrunal is not getting married next month. This is a rumour that has caught wind for no reason."

Industry insiders further pointed out that Mrunal’s busy slate makes the rumours unlikely. Her film ‘Do Deewane Seher Mein’, co-starring Siddhant Chaturvedi, is scheduled for release around mid-February, followed by another Telugu film releasing in March. As one source noted: "She has a release scheduled for February, why would she get married in such close proximity of her film release? And then in March, she has another film's release in Telugu in March."

Origins of the speculation

Talk of a possible relationship between the two actors surfaced in mid-2025 after they were seen interacting warmly at the premiere of ‘Son of Sardaar 2’. Their appearance together at the wrap party for Dhanush’s project ‘Tere Ishk Mein’ further added to the rumour mill.

Mrunal later appeared to indirectly address the speculation through an Instagram video of herself on a boat at sunset, captioned: "Grounded, glowing and unshaken!" Though it did not mention the rumours directly, many interpreted the post as a subtle response.

Another case of AI-generated celebrity imagery

The spread of digitally fabricated celebrity wedding images has become increasingly common. Similar AI-generated photos of Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda allegedly marrying went viral last year before being debunked.

Both actors, according to those close to them, remain focused on their professional commitments, and no official announcements regarding marriage have been made.
