Is The Devil Wears Prada 3 happening? Director shares update after sequel success

Los Angeles: The Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel has hinted that a third instalment in the beloved fashion franchise may not be entirely off the table following the success of The Devil Wears Prada 2.
After the strong reception to the recently released sequel, Frankel admitted he would be open to revisiting the series once more if the right opportunity arose. The follow-up film reunited original stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci nearly two decades after the first film debuted.
Speaking to Variety, Frankel revealed he never imagined returning for a second film after the original became a global hit in 2006. However, he stopped short of dismissing the idea of another sequel altogether.
“Look, it took us 20 years to do this one. And I said, ‘Never again,’ and here we are,” Frankel said. “So, I certainly would never say, ‘Never again,’ again. Let’s see what happens. If there was an opportunity to revisit the characters and to share a few months with these wonderful actors again, obviously, I’d love it.”

Frankel also opened up about weaving nostalgic callbacks from the original film into the sequel. Fans spotted several references, including Andy brushing her teeth during the opening montage, the memorable “identical belts” moment and a nod to the iconic cerulean sweater speech.

According to the filmmaker, some of the references were added late in production, while others felt natural to include. However, he admitted the team was careful not to overuse them.
“There were little things, like the belts, that were late in the game additions,” he explained. “Other things, like the cerulean sweater and lines like, ‘A million girls would kill for this job,’ were easy to do. Then we had to go through and edit some out because if there were too many, you’d get a little annoyed with us.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 arrived in cinemas on 1 May 2026 and has been met with positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, reigniting fan discussions about where the franchise could head next.
