'Cocktail 2' box office collection Day 1: Shahid Kapoor scores second-biggest opener of his career

# Entertainment Desk

‘Cocktail 2’, starring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna, has registered a solid opening at the Indian box office despite receiving mixed reviews from audiences and critics following its theatrical release on Friday.

The romantic drama, directed by Homi Adajania, earned an estimated Rs 13.50 crore net in India on its first day, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The film's domestic gross collection stood at approximately Rs 16.20 crore, while it added around Rs 4 crore from international markets, taking its worldwide gross total to Rs 20.20 crore on opening day.

The film's performance comes as Bollywood continues to look for major theatrical successes, with trade observers now closely watching its weekend momentum and Monday collections to gauge its long-term prospects.

Strong opening despite mixed reception

The spiritual sequel to the 2012 hit ‘Cocktail’ was screened extensively across the country, with more than 10,000 shows reportedly scheduled on its opening day.

According to occupancy data, the film recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 20.04 percent on Friday. Audience turnout gradually increased throughout the day, beginning with 11.08 percent occupancy during morning shows before rising to 21.38 percent in the afternoon and 23.69 percent during evening screenings.

Night shows attracted the highest footfall, registering an occupancy of 37.62 percent, suggesting growing audience interest as the day progressed.

Among major markets, Delhi-NCR recorded an occupancy of 16.3 percent across nearly 1,200 shows, while Mumbai reported 19.7 percent occupancy from more than 700 screenings.

Shahid Kapoor's second-biggest opener

The film has delivered one of the strongest openings of Shahid Kapoor's career.

With an opening-day collection of Rs 13.50 crore, ‘Cocktail 2’ has emerged as the actor's second-highest opener, trailing only ‘Kabir Singh’, which had collected Rs 20 crore on its first day before eventually becoming one of the biggest blockbusters of his career.

The encouraging start is expected to receive a further boost over the weekend, particularly as the film faces relatively limited competition from new Bollywood releases.

Competition at the box office

While ‘Cocktail 2’ has secured a favourable start, it is currently competing with several films already running in cinemas, including Manoj Bajpayee's ‘Bandar’, Varun Dhawan's ‘Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’, Hollywood horror release ‘Obsession’, Imtiaz Ali's ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ and Vikram Bhatt's ‘Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past’.

However, the absence of any major new Hindi release this week could work in favour of the Shahid Kapoor-led film and help sustain audience interest over the coming days.

Shahid Kapoor on the film's A certificate

Ahead of the film's release, Shahid Kapoor addressed the Central Board of Film Certification's decision to award ‘Cocktail 2’ an Adult (A) certificate.

Speaking during an interaction with fans, the actor expressed surprise over the classification and said:

"There is nothing in this film that audiences could find objectionable. I know we have received an A certificate, and I am still trying to figure out why. I didn't understand it myself. This is the story of three people, and it is a film that can be watched with everyone. I hope you walk out with a big smile, reflecting on life. There are many moments that make life special, and Cocktail 2 is the kind of film that reminds you of those moments."

About the film

Directed by Homi Adajania and written by Luv Ranjan, ‘Cocktail 2’ serves as a spiritual successor to the 2012 blockbuster ‘Cocktail’, which starred Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty.

The new instalment centres on a complicated relationship dynamic involving three characters. According to the film's synopsis: "After a decade together, Diya and Kunal's relationship is shaken when Ally, an old friend, re-enters their lives. What begins as a plan between two women spirals into chaos, triggering a hilarious emotional rollercoaster none of them saw coming."

Besides Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna, the film also features Tiku Talsania in a key role and includes a special appearance by Pulkit Samrat.
