Can you imagine anyone but Revathi in Mohanlal's Kilukkam? The casting twist that almost had Amala as heroine

Mohanlal’s 1991 hits Kilukkam and Ulladakkam are celebrated for their iconic performances—but there’s a fascinating behind-the-scenes twist that many fans didn’t know. The lead actresses of these films, Revathi and Amala, were originally cast in each other’s roles, resulting in a last-minute switch that changed the course of both films—and their careers.

Even Jagathy’s role in ‘Kilukkam’ had a casting twist. Sreenivasan was initially chosen to play Jagathy’s character, but he stepped down due to scheduling conflicts.

These intriguing facts were revealed by a Mohanlal fan club page.

Amala almost starred in ‘Kilukkam’

Initially, Amala was selected to play the female lead in Priyadarshan’s ‘Kilukkam’. However, due to personal reasons, she had to step aside just before shooting began. This opened the door for Revathi, who went on to deliver one of her most celebrated performances as Revathi, a character still loved by audiences today.

Revathi turns down ‘Ulladakkam’

A similar story unfolded in Kamal’s Ulladakkam. Revathi was first chosen for the lead role of Rose Mary, but she declined—reluctant to play a character reminiscent of Nandini in Kilukkam. Producer Suresh Balaji then suggested Amala, who embraced the role with enthusiasm, even studying a foreign documentary to portray the character authentically. Her dedication included cutting her hair short for the role and even temporarily returning to Chennai to maintain continuity during filming.

The switch benefited both stars

The result? Revathi gained one of her most iconic roles in ‘Kilukkam’, while Amala created a memorable performance in ‘Ulladakkam’. Both actresses walked away with career-defining characters that showcased their immense talent.

Fun trivia: Crossover moments and iconic scenes

Interestingly, during the filming of ‘Ulladakkam’, some of the crew from ‘Kilukkam’ visited for a small patchwork sequence, leading to the iconic song “Meenavenalil…” in which Mohanlal wore the same costume later featured in Ulladakkam’s climactic scene.

A casting twist for the ages

This fascinating swap highlights how small behind-the-scenes changes can create cinematic magic. Fans now know that some of Malayalam Cinema’s most memorable performances might have looked entirely different if the original casting had stayed intact.
