Border 2 cast, release date and music: Everything you need to know

Nearly three decades after JP Dutta’s landmark 1997 film ‘Border’ left a lasting imprint on Indian cinema, its spiritual successor is preparing to take audiences back to the battleground of the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Directed by Anurag Singh, ‘Border 2’ promises to revive the emotion, patriotism and intensity of the original, while shifting its focus to untold stories and a new generation of soldiers.
With a blend of returning actors and emerging talent, the war drama aims to marry nostalgia with contemporary storytelling. Recently, the makers launched the music video of the recreated track ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’ at an event in Jaisalmer, marked by an emotional address by Sunny Deol, who reprises his role as Lieutenant Colonel Fateh Singh Kaler.
Why border 2 is back in the spotlight
The musical launch held in front of the Tanot Mata Temple drew nearly 12,000 attendees, including BSF personnel and senior officials. Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, Sonu Nigam and producer Bhushan Kumar were among those present.
Sunny Deol reflected on why he took up the original film, recalling that he was inspired by his father Dharmendra’s wartime classic ‘Haqeeqat’. Addressing BSF soldiers, he said, "Ever since I did Border... I have been a part of your family… When I became an actor, I spoke to JP Dutta sahab, and we both decided to make a movie on the Battle of Longewala subject, which is very dear to you all and resides in your hearts."
Visibly emotional, he added that countless soldiers have told him they joined the armed forces after watching the 1997 film. He concluded with the now-viral line from the new teaser: "Aawaz kaha tak pahuchni chahiye? Lahore Tak."
Returning cast: Iconic roles revisited
Several key actors from ‘Border’ will return in special appearances, once again portraying their original characters:
- Sunny Deol as Lieutenant Colonel Fateh Singh Kaler
- Suniel Shetty (cameo) as Assistant Commandant Bhairon Singh Rathore, SM
- Akshaye Khanna (cameo) as 2nd Lieutenant Dharamvir Singh Bhakhri
- Sudesh Berry as Naib Subedar Mathura Das, SM
All three characters played by Shetty, Khanna and Berry were martyred in the 1997 film. Their presence in the sequel is woven through a pre-war event where the old squad interacts with the younger generation of soldiers. According to reports, the filmmakers believed this moment would bridge eras and amplify emotional weight.
The sequence was shot in parts–Akshaye Khanna and Sudesh Berry completed their scenes in Mumbai in November, while Suniel Shetty’s portion was filmed against a green screen due to his schedule. Special effects will be used to digitally de-age all three actors to resemble their 1997 looks.

The sequel also introduces a fresh line-up of performers who take on significant roles representing the Army, Air Force and Navy:
- Varun Dhawan as Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya
- Diljit Dosanjh as Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon
- Ahan Shetty as Lieutenant Commander MS Rawat
- Mona Singh as Fateh’s wife (role yet to be named)
- Medha Rana as Dhano Devi, Hoshiar’s wife

The new song: ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’
A reimagining of the beloved ‘Sandese Aate Hain’, the song ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’ was released on January 2. Composed by Mithoon with additional lyrics by Manoj Muntashir, the track features Sonu Nigam, Arijit Singh, Diljit Dosanjh, Roop Kumar Rathod and Vishal Mishra.
While many listeners praised the emotional tribute, others felt the original still holds unmatched charm. The teaser released earlier highlighted the longing experienced by families awaiting their loved ones’ return from the front lines.
Plot and themes: Lesser-known stories of the 1971 war
‘Border 2’ expands its canvas beyond Longewala to spotlight unsung heroes from the 1971 conflict, portraying the camaraderie, unity and sacrifice of soldiers across the Army, Navy and Air Force. The film intends to capture both the brutality and the human dimension of wartime duties.
Actor Arjun Rampal recently lauded the project after watching the teaser, writing: “Love the new energy these handsome and solid youngsters Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty are bringing; with the backing of the one and only Sunny Deol, I guess India is in good hands.”
Budget and release date
The production budget is reported to be between ₹150 crore and ₹250 crore.
‘Border 2’ is scheduled for a theatrical release on 23 January 2026, perfectly timed to coincide with the Republic Day weekend.
