Veteran Tamil filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja, who died in Chennai on Wednesday aged 84, leaves behind a body of work that influenced generations of filmmakers and actors. While he was widely celebrated for directing classics such as 16 Vayathinile, one of his last notable appearances on screen came in the Malayalam hit Thudarum.

The Padma Shri awardee had moved away from filmmaking in recent years but remained active as an actor. In Thudarum, he appeared alongside Mohanlal as Stunt Master Palani Swamy, a character whose role extended far beyond his limited screen presence.

The mentor behind Shanmughan’s journey

In the film, Palani Swamy is a veteran stunt choreographer and the man who introduced Mohanlal’s character Shanmughan to the world of cinema. Before settling into life as a taxi driver in Ranni, Shanmughan worked as a stunt double under his mentor's guidance.

The character is also woven into the protagonist’s personal life. The story reveals that Shanmughan met Lalitha, played by Shobana, while working as Palani Swamy’s assistant. As a result, the stunt master becomes an important figure in the couple’s shared history and family life.

A key emotional presence

Though Bharathiraja appears only briefly, Palani Swamy’s influence is felt throughout the narrative. The character serves as a mentor and father figure whose presence helps explain the choices, relationships and experiences that shaped Shanmughan.

His death within the story becomes one of the losses carried by the protagonist, adding another layer to the emotional weight of the film. This connection gives the character significance beyond his screen time.

Bharathiraja brought decades of cinematic experience to the role. Known for reshaping Tamil cinema with stories rooted in rural life, he added authenticity and warmth to Palani Swamy, making the character an integral part of Thudarum’s emotional framework.

His appearance in the film now stands among the notable acting performances from the final chapter of a career that spanned directing, writing, producing and acting across Indian cinema.
