Bhanupriya: Yesteryear actor-dancer who gave up her craft due to memory loss

Renowned actor Bhanupriya has long been celebrated not just for her acting prowess but also for her extraordinary talent in classical dance. Having trained in dance from a young age, it was more than just an art form to her—it was her life’s breath. Even when she ventured into films, her deep-rooted passion for dance remained undiminished.
Many filmmakers, recognising her exceptional abilities, ensured that her films prominently featured classical dance sequences. Bhanupriya herself has often spoken about her early fascination with dance.
"I started learning dance in my childhood. After school, I prioritised dance over homework. I would choreograph steps to songs I heard on the radio, and that’s when my family enrolled me in formal training. That skill later became my greatest asset in cinema."
Her role as a dancer in the Telugu film Swarnakamalam remains one of the most exquisite cinematic portrayals of classical dance. Films such as Sitaara, Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal, and Rajashilpi also showcased her mesmerising dance performances. In Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal, a dance-off between Bhanupriya and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy became the film’s standout moment.
Even within the film industry, Bhanupriya was known for her seriousness towards dance. Veteran actor Chiranjeevi, who shared the screen with her in numerous films, once remarked:
"I have always felt good chemistry with my co-stars during dance sequences. But with Bhanupriya, it was different. She was always more focused on the technical aspects of dance rather than the performance itself. She was also intent on outshining her co-stars, which sometimes affected the chemistry."
His words, rather than criticism, were an acknowledgment of her dedication and skill.
However, in a recent interview, Bhanupriya revealed a heartbreaking transformation. The actor, once inseparable from dance, has lost her passion for it. The turning point came in 2018 with the untimely death of her husband. Devastated, she withdrew from the public eye, and soon after, memory loss set in. She began forgetting not just daily activities but also her craft. Even dialogues for films started slipping from her mind. And, most painfully for her fans, the love she had for dance faded.
"A few years ago, I started forgetting things. That’s when I realised my health was deteriorating. I had dreamt of opening my own dance studio, but I have abandoned that dream now. I don’t even practise at home anymore," she admitted.
For those who once adored her grace and artistry, this revelation was deeply saddening. Bhanupriya, who once saw dance as essential as breathing, now finds it slipping away from her life.
