The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has appointed Ashutosh Gowariker as the Festival Director for the 57th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will take place in Goa.

Long-standing association with IFFI

Gowariker’s appointment reflects his long association with the festival, which spans several decades. Sharing his response, the filmmaker said, “It gives me immense pride and joy to serve as the Festival Director for the prestigious 57th International Film Festival of India, Goa.”

He added, “From attending it in 1984 to continuing my association over the years, right up to 2024, when I served as the Jury President for International Cinema.”

Highlighting the festival’s legacy, he said, “To carry forward the legacy that has been created, nurtured, and expanded over the decades since 1952 by innumerable festival teams, is a great honour, accompanied by a renewed sense of responsibility.”

A filmmaker known for scale and storytelling

Ashutosh Gowariker is widely recognised for his large-scale films that blend storytelling with historical and social themes. His critically acclaimed film Lagaan received an Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category, bringing international attention to Indian cinema.

He followed this with notable works such as Swades and Jodhaa Akbar, further establishing his reputation for ambitious filmmaking and detailed narratives.

As Festival Director, Gowariker is expected to oversee the creative and organisational aspects of IFFI, working closely with the Ministry and the Goa government to shape the upcoming edition.

The festival, first held in 1952, remains one of India’s most prominent platforms for showcasing both domestic and international cinema.

The 57th edition of IFFI is expected to build on its long-standing reputation as a global film platform, attracting filmmakers, industry professionals, and audiences from across the world.

With Gowariker at the helm, the festival aims to continue its legacy while adapting to evolving trends in global cinema.
